Renesongs
I kind of like most of the sounds my daughter,(15), plays me. Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, Seether, Panic at the Disco. (Rene ducks while Spyke prepares petrol bombs to hurl at a geriatric Emo, yes I have to confess I liked David Bowie as well back in the day ☹ ). I think the lyrics are really smart, rebellious, the music similar to 70's rock but with a lot more technology at their disposal , rhythms are generally fuller and thrashier, no risk of having to sit through 15 minute guitar/keyboard/drum solos or vocal screamathons
Renesongs
I love good lyrics, even sung badly, (Bob Dylan, Donald Fagan, Leonard Cohen), but the 3 lyrical styles I have no taste for are RAP, Opera, and effeminate screeching of a metal vocalist, kind of reminds me of an opera diva with the attitude of a rap artist.

Hey Reef why the splutter do you think these guys write bad lyrics or do you thing that they sing well ? ???

Its my gut reaction to criticism of Bob Dylan. Just when my therapist thought I was making progress too ... then you gotta go insult the Bob. Why René, why?!? [me=Reef]falls to ground in anguish[/me]

Hey I'm sorry man - I like Bob too - maybe if I lend you my copy of Martin Scorsese's "No Direction home" you will cheer you up, (in about 220 minutes), and won't have to go back into electro-shock therapy :-[

Yup. Got all those. ? I have over 10GB of clips too. Bios, Interviews and sundry live snippets. The live archive footage they found recently of the Mothers in the BBC studio. Even the early (pre moustache!) clip where he plays a bicycle on he Steve Allen show.
Ever see

So I finally got around to listening to some Zappa (Overnight Sensation). I knew of him before but was not familiar with his music and I must say, IMO the man was a musical genius, judging from the bit I listened to this morning. A bit strange on the ear at first, almost like the first taste of a good single malt. The more I heard, the more I liked it. I was looking for new stuff to listen to, and I'm glad I was introduced to Zappa on GFSA!

Brilliant! We'll get you as a paid up member of the First Church of Applientology yet.
Apostrophe is the next logical step, as it was recorded at the same time as Overnite Sensation - basically together they are two parts of one long album.

i read that Vai did a stint 4 Zappa after furiosly stalking him as a kid
- dont eat the yellow snow
AlanRatcliffe
Yup. He used to write and bug Frank for scores every few days. Frank eventually sent him the score to The Black Page (the evil bastard). Vai rewrote it in a different time signature overnight and sent it back. Frank sent him a ticket to fly down and audition.
He auditioned, but was too nervous and messed it up completely (afterward Frank said: "I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitarist."). Steve asked for another chance, so Frank let him do a second audition at his house that night - which he nailed. So Frank hired him, but he had to wait until his next birthday to join, because he was too young to play legally.
Frank was legendary for his scores, but was impressed by Vai's transcription skills. He mentioned later that after recording The Dangerous Kitchen (where the Zappa's vocal is overdubbed with an identical "talking" guitar part), Steve transcribed it perfectly and was able to read his transcription and reproduce it perfectly first time when they went on tour nearly a year later.

Got my hands on a double DVD Zappa Plays Zappa ... it's awesome. This concert was devised by Dweezil Zappa for his papa. He has some serious musos performing including Steve Vai. Vai actually does some serious solos which for a change sounds bloody good to my bass ear!
AlanRatcliffe
That is a good concert - killer lineup. Dweezil is himself a great guitarist (taught by Eddie van Halen and Michael Angelo) and has really nailed his dad's stuff. Doesn't have the compositional chops (who does?) but has pulled together the right musicians to pull off the material properly.
Vai shows his stuff well in the Zappa songs, because Frank wrote all his parts for him ( he called Vai's playing "stunt guitar"). It's rarely just shredding over a band backing, but usually part of the composition. One notable "shredfest" is Stevie's Spanking, where the two trade off and Zappa keeps up with Vai surprisingly well and wipes the stage with him tonally. ?
Another good one, if you get the chance to see it is the Zappa's Universe tribute concert with a bunch of ex-Zappa band members.

Yeah... Black Napkins is a piece that I listen to often enough. ?
I'll listen to it again. ?

Erm..why I never head of this Zappa character? Something's amiss. Anyone tell me what's their "most" famous "most" familier "most" overplayed song?
