I need help!

I have a Ibenez g10. And it needs some work done on it. Do you think it is worth it. It is not a great guitar but at the moment I can not afford a new one. I play every day.

Depends on the work you want doing. Setup stuff is always worth doing, but don't go in for major hardware changes.

Phase 1 set-up - R300
Truss rod adjustment and action set to optimum level without buzzing or chocking.
Fret board cleaned and oiled/polished.
Trimming of fret ends.
Intonation set when possible (as with most electric guitars).
Stringing (Strings charged separately in the case of all services).
It's this what I need.

That's worth doing. Consider splurging on action adjustment too.

So then maybe I should do this:
Deluxe Set-up - R600
All services rendered in a Phase 1 set-up plus...
Fret dressing and individual profiling.
Nut tuning.
Electronics sprayed out to minimise deterioration of potentiometers and crackling of switches etc.

Fret dressing is nice - I presume that comes with action adjustment (it should). By "nut tuning", does he means nut action adjustment? I don't believe in spraying out pots as it washes away any lubricant and they wear faster.

I'd say it's worth it. R300 or R600 is nothing compared to the cost of getting a better guitar. The few times I've played around with those Ibanez starter guitars, I always thought they were quite playable, just needing a good setup.

My dad said I can get a second hand guitar. So lets see if there are any decent prices. I want to got to music connection and see what they have. But is it a good Idea to buy second hand. And alan I think its nut action adjustment.

Buy second hand: yes. For sure it's a good idea. All my guitars were 2nd hand until recently. Guitars have fewer potential hidden pitfalls than say cars or electronic goods.

AFAIK it also includes making sure the nut is not pinching the strings (causing tuning instability) as well as making sure the strings sit well on the nut so that the intonation is correct etc...

I vote for second hand! There are some bargains out there, you just need to be patient.

That looks likes it's from the McGibbon's web site. I recently had their deluxe setup done on one of my guitars. I thought it money well spent. R600 is not bad for that work.

Wherever you take it to discuss your other wants/needs/ideas with them and see what they will cost. Then you can start prioritising, or saving for a new axe.

There's lots of specials on new guitars right now. Might pay you to shop around.

Yep. I just had a setup done at Andy's. They cover all of those aspects of the nut.

This is true if one uses an alcohol based cleaning solvent, however there are aerosol type treatments available that will clean flux, tarnish and grime off dirty pots and switches and leave a special lubricating compound on all the surfaces. The lube forms a barrier to the elements and your hardware stays slick and reliable. I treat all new wire wound attenuation pots that I use for Tube Tamer with Servisol. Failure to do this results in the pot feeling rough and sometimes even scratchiness on the audio when the pot is turned.
