Thinking of filling my own stocking this Xmas with an ebow... any recommendations for suppliers/manufacturers? Plus, how much of a factor is string gauge?

Good idea Jack
I know how it sounds but I would have no idea how it works. :-[
Big Country used to get good sounds and Phil Keaggy used it to great effect in the 70's

They are often hard to find, so buy from whoever has it. There were some locally available a couple of years ago and I'm kicking myself for not grabbing one while I could - they haven't been around since and don't show up secondhand. String gauge is not a serious factor. There's a bit of a knack to using them, but they are not impossible to handle.

Damn, I didn't realise that they're so rare... I'll do a scout around Cape Town but otherwise will have to visit Andy's in the new year... R900 seems reasonable though!

I didn't know Andy even had them... :-[

I got one a few years back when a friend went overseas. Cost me R600. At the time they were available from a supplier in JHB, can’t remember which one, for over R1000. So I got a sweet deal.
It basically creates a magnetic field that vibrates the string causing endless sustain. As you move it closer to a pickup, it increases the intensity of vibration in the string and consequently, louder volume, as it works in conjunction with the magnetic field generated by the pickup. So you can go up or down in volume depending on how close you are to the pickup and mimic a "bowing" effect.
It even works on an acoustic (with nickel strings and a Piezo pickup) although it’s softer - but still usable. It’s really kiff.
