Audacity is a great program ....... Vlc is the best damn video player klaar ..... And repear as a daw . And the best thing is all of the programs are free aswell ..... Now if only music was open source

Another free DAW to look at is Ardour. I'm no pro but it's very good. It took a while to understand it but, once you get the basics, you're A-for-Away and, in the right hands, and on the right hardware, I'm sure you can get very good results with it!
Oh and did I mention that it's free? ?

Last I looked, Reaper isn't open source - unlimited trial and cheap when you do play, but not open source.

Alan, is correct. Reaper is not free, about $220 for the full license.

But there is an unlimited trail period.

$60 if it's for personal use

I use VLC for EVERYTHING - it even makes tea for me in the mornings. Another handy tip, if you need to rip DVDs for backup (I also like to put concerts on my laptop for travel too) and they have the new 99plus title copy protection, VLC tells you which title is playing (the one with all the chapters in the correct order) which makes backup with (also brilliantly free) rippers like Handbrake easy.
Bob-Dubery
Windows Media Player has a similar feature.

No Bob Windows media mangler can not slow down The FLV files of John Petrucci that we pirate off you tube so that you can see the extra hands of his conjoined Siamese midget twin popping out of his shirt sleeve during one of his uber fast solos. :-\

Oh well then. It's not much use is it?
?

I must be missing something but I'm not sure what,
Installed VLC ...really nice, tho' I don't have the option under playback to slow things down ???
I can slow things down using the slider for playback rate in the status bar but this affects the pitch also.
Any clues .... running it using ALSA and sometimes JACK, ver 9.90a on Ubuntu.
TIA

I'm running 1.0.2 so maybe it's a newer feature? I sure didn't notice it before!

V 1.0.3 Works on Windows XP.
Maybe it depends on the sample rates supported by a soundcard and it's driver?

I recently bought the Amazing slow downer from www.ronimusic.com. I think it was about $48.
This has got to be the best learning tool ever. When I think of all those years trying to work out how people played riffs off of records and CDs. Now I play all my learning and practice music through it, Guitar Techniques discs, CDs, music files and guitar tutor CDs. Get the free demo and then pay for the licence if you like it. (Less than 1 Meg to download).
Every time I use it (daily) I enjoy its flexibility. They have now brought out a DVD slowdowner version which I haven't tried.
Hope this is of use.
Ray
Hello FingerPicker. Can you tell me how you use it with Guitar Techniqies disc plse? I can get to check out the video lesson but the audio tracks, I just cant find when I try to open them from open file or advanced open file.
Fingerpicker
Hi Ray,
Did you download from the website?
Which version of slowdowner do you have?
Below the menu tabs there is a drop-down menu where you choose between "file player" or "CD player". Choose CD player and the audio files immediately populate the blank section.
I have version 3.2.6 which I think is the latest.
Let me know if you are still having a problem.
Ray
Thanks, got you now FP. Going to give this a bash and if I plan to use it I think I will purchase. Downloaded it and all they say in the about is 4.2 something. Cheers
Wizard
Just found this feature on my VLC player and hunted down the fastest music I could find.
--> Mendelssohn Violin Concerto; Jascha Heifetz
Slowed down a really speedy bit (26 seconds in)
... to discover the bugger was phrasing it perfectly
... with emphasis perfectly placed at the beginning of the bar
... at 4 billion miles an hour.
I had been told he could do that ... VLC proved it
?
