The Rage Against X Factor Christmas Campaign

I recently read an article on UG.com about a campaign to prevent Simon Cowel from getting a number 1 single this Christmas off his show 'X Factor'. The idea is that when the winner of X Factor releases his or her cover of 'The Climb' by Miley Cyrus ??? just before Christmas, everyone is supposed to go out and buy a copy of 'Killing In The Name' by Rage Against The Machine ?

What does GFSA think about this? From what the article said, it seems as if there are those that believe Simon Cowel is sorta rigging the charts every Christmas to get himself another No. 1 hit - something he has supposedly done for about the last 4 years in a row.

I personally think that if the winner of X Factor was releasing an origininal song then this campaign would be completely unfair. But to release a cover of a Miley Cyrus song!!!?? What the heck! I can't stand tweeny bopper sensations like her, the Jonas Bros and any other 'artist' that Disney can throw at us. So for a cover of a Miley song to reach number one this Christmas almost seems like an insult to the scores of other musicians who deserve the spot.

On the other hand, is this maybe not just a clever ploy by certain ex members of RATM who need the $$$ to buy their own Christmas presents? ?

Even if Rage against the Machine needed cash, I would give it to them, They were a great band, great music, all in all very good. I think its rad that they no 1 maybe something a bit different. Sky news did an article on this too, its all being promoted via facebook and twitter, goes to show the power of online marketing.

So let me get this straight, The world didn't ignore Miley Cyrus singing the song hard enough? So now they are trying again?

I was at my son's school concert thing, he's 3, and they had a 5 year old girl sing along to that song. Until then I hadn't heard it before. Someone sitting near me was crying when I asked why, she said, "She's so brave. *sniff sniff*"

I'm taking my son out that school...

If anybody's trying to rig something here it's Rage Against The Machine. If you really want to deprive Simon Cowell of revenues then all you have to do is buy anything else.

I'm with the anything-else or just-don't-buy-it sentiment, however IF everyone did buy a single agreed-upon album as proposed, it would send a pretty cool message. I hope it works even though there's no way I'm buying a RATM album just as a gesture. What about some alternatives. The Best of Decapitated and a few other alternative xmas standards perhaps haha.

if 40% buy the Cowell single,
38% buy the RATM,
and 22% buy somethign else, then the Cowell single will be on top anyway.

However if more people buy the RATM, then it will work...

So the whole point is not to prevent Cowell from selling singles, but rather to prevent him making the #1 slot!

I still think that it's RATM, or some of their more devoted fans, who are trying to rig something here.

I don't know this creature because I don't listen to radio or watch TV so I tend to listen to music on recommendation - not as it's dished out. But I assume he's a tool, yes?

I guess the choice of RATM is because of the band name - in reference to this campaign? I wouldn't do it if I didn't think RATM was a fantastic group. But I'm really tempted now.

It reminds me (gather round kids, while I wheeze out my reminiscences) of the end of the 90s, and my slack-jawed horror watching Britney and Christina overwhelming the screens where Smashing Pumpkins, RATM, Sonic Youth, and Nick Cave had been a few short years before. It gave me a cold chill, and a sense of foreboding that justified itself as the new decade unfolded, elected Bush, and laughed in my face.

Maybe it's time to pull the reverse. Let the blow-schnarfing, $120 haircut, Hughie Lewis listening executives realise they've misjudged the temperature of the public.

I'm in (if only because I don't own the record yet).

But but but... the drones at Sony may make a packet either way, but they might start altering their offerings based on a strong showing for a band like RATM.
