Nice. I find him definitely an acquired taste, he's so effortlessly all over the place, all the time, it's kind of hard getting the "hook", basically there is none. But he's so highly rated by so many top guitarists, you know there has to be something worth hanging in there for.
Now I'm wondering, the whole "feel vs technique" debate - to me he's near the end-point of that spectrum, he's basically all technique. I mean there's no emotion there, much less even than say Malmsteen who we know is a neo-classical robot. Do the "feel" type people discount his art as invalid then? I'd be interested to hear some opinions. Mine is that "feel" is overrrated and this proves it. ?
I reckon it depends upon what 'feel' you're talking about. It certainly isn't blatant anger, humour, pathos or fear etc... In the first clip his harmony progressions are radical and most unexpected and takes me on a journey of discovery - a look at the unknown, which moves me spiritually in a similar way that a Gregorian chant does. Clip two shows off his technical speed abilities but it does more than that for me - I get a feeling of continual movement - fast-paced but neither frenetic nor desperate but with a certain confident sense of urgency - perhaps a mirror of our current urban lifestyles.
To me there is emotion there - understated perhaps - and maybe beyond the understanding of some?
