Is it just me or are drummers really hard to come by?

Almost all the ads I see are "Band needs drummer" or "Drummer needed", you go over to the guitar section and it's the opposite "Guitarist seeks band" or "Guitarist still looking for band".

I can understand that maybe more people go into guitar for financial reasons, convenience, practicality but I would think there should be a good ratio of 2:1 this does not seem to be the case though.

In my limited experience in playing in a few bands and mostly church bands, is that there are a few drummers around, most of them are just not good enough to play with. Most of the drummers we had at church suck at timing because they learn to play from a friend/father/uncle etc. but never practise with a metronome or click tracks. They don't even own their own kit and only practise at band practise.

The other very hard to find luxury (if you will) is a proper bass player. Most guys learn bass the easy way and play bass like an acoustic guitarist would, they don't learn to play bass properly.

the easiest way to find a drummer is to go to a drum teacher and ask for one of his students, ok they might suck but hey at least they are taking lessons and will progress with time.

Have to agree, I've only ever come across one good bass player, 5 string and his technique was supreme (To be honest I think he made the band as the rest of us were just lost without him) Him and the vocalist started dating though and the band fell through. ☹

I've tried this, I have a friend that has 10 years behind the drums and teaches now, I had a few sessions with a few of his pupils but most of them lack the dedication and ended up dropping out, also the problem with students is most of them are scared to play. The one girl had to have a couple of drinks before she was "ready". I should probably give this another bash though maybe I've just had bad luck.

You guys don't know of any South African drumming forums or something to that effect?

Well I think i must have got a lucky strike because our bands drummer is pretty damn good and keen about the whole thing. Most practices its the rest of us sorting out whats what and we can rest on the fact that the drummer wont mess up and does the job well.

I wouldnt have thought theres a shortage of drummers though. Compare drums to guitarists and it looks like theres a shortage but there are still a bunch of them around

Maby you should get some drummer to start a drumforum.co.za , i have seen some local drum magazines in music shops, that is widely spread.
