singemonkey Sadly true. Hiking in Canada is a bit freaky. There's no sure way to stop a grizzly from attacking, other than that it's less likely to attack if it knows you're coming. Once it does, it can run as fast as a race-horse, can shake trees to make you fall out, etc.. So you need to curl yourself into foetal position to "protect your vital organs." ??? Then they'll usually just bat you around and you'll suffer only massive lacerations and blood loss. This sign is saying, if they actually settle down to devour you, you have to make a last, almost certainly futile, attempt to frighten it off (presumably you're already beaten and torn up at this point). They're terrifying animals. Yeah, they don't tend to actually try to kill you, like lions will. But then again, there aren't that many places where you're walking around where lions hang out. In Canadia, grizzlies can walk into your suburban back yard while you're lying in your hammock, watching the hockey on a portable.
