Anyone bought a guitar off the Internet from overseas?

Hi All, I have a very particular GAS - I really like the simplicity of the re-issue Gibson Melody Maker, I know there are dozens of better and cheaper alternatives - it still doesn't stop me wanting one! ? Gibson's official response to me was to buy one in a country where they operate - really helpful.... Has anyone bought a guitar of a site on the net and brought it into SA? Doable? Or avoid at all costs? Sadly it's the only way I will get one here... Cheers, Ant

In my specific case it was 13 days from placing the order. I was nicely surprised. I think their time estimate was 14 -21 days, something like that.

And you got it through Take2.co.za? Sorry I am obviously not following well.

From Take2.co.za yes. Actually it's from Amazon.com, with Take2 doing the importing on your behalf. But it's seamless, you only deal with Take2.

Go to the MoreUSA tab on the Take2 website, select Musical Instruments in the search box dropdown list and search as normal, "schecter loomis" for instance will get you to the guitar I bought.

I've bought some cd's from them and it was OK and now got my eye on a Godin 5th avenue and some or other danelectro an orange one it must be.

Take2 are totally solid, I've been using them since 2004. Admittedly not usually for large ticket items like guitars.

OK thanks BMU. I found a couple of flamenco models there. What do I do though if the thing arrives and the neck is broken or an albatross made a nest in the body?

They're an endangered species, so my guess is you'll have to eat and then regurgitate fish until the chick is reared.

I'm sure they have all kinds of policies that will allow you to return the thing if you're unhappy, Conrad.

Conrad: before I paid for the Schecter I emailed Take2 to make sure if it arrived broken I can get my money back. I wanted to be sure there's no 3 month wait for a replacement: goods broken, money back. End of story. I also wanted to see how responsive they'd be before I shelled over the big bucks. They came through on both counts, I think they replied the next business day. I suggest you do the same before taking the plunge, make sure you're at ease with the deal.

Then as I mentioned, I picked it up from them, opened it right there on the floor...and walked away beaming like the cheshire cat obviously. It was fun too, got plently of ooh'ing and ahh'ing and what a nice guitar. ?

I did mention in the other thread this guitar arrived without a case, just packed in two cardboard boxes, and it still was ok.
