For some years I've been pondering the possibility that at some ancient level there is a connection between the Irish musical tradition and soul music.
It seems to me the Irish have an affinity for soul. Even Bono is a soul singer at the heart of his craft.
I have been watching the latest series of Transatlantic Sessions (series 4, just released). One of the guests is Liam Ó Maonlaí of Hothouse Flowers. One of his contributions is a very soulful version of Oscar Brown's "Work Song". He really rips it up. Interesting to see too how supposed celtic folk singers like Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Julie Fowlis do such a great job of the backing vocals.
So there it is: Another Irish singer doing a very convincing job of soul music.
Does anybody else see/hear this connection?
