DonovanB MikeM wrote Which model Squier? +1. And where made? I'd stay away from the newer Chinese strats. The Koreans seem to be able to make some good quality guitars now. They're worth a peek.
Nitebob Must admit I didn't pay that close attention. Just saw Fender in the finreprint and thought 'whoa, for R999?!!! Really?!!!' @Donovan, now that you mention it, I think it might be a Chinese model :-\
Mornay I got an sx bass in Feb It is awesome. But then again i don't know much about guitars. THe problems i found with it was the pickup screws were loose. The tuning nuts were loose, And the strings were poor quality. All these problems were solved in 10mins. And a set of new strings. Now it sounds fantastic and it hardly ever needs tuning. What i will say is that this guitar is for beginners like myself. Give me sometime and i will let you know if it is still enjoyable in a few months time as i get better at playing it. I do have access to another bass so iwill play that one at some point and give a comparison. I will recommend an SX anytime.
Keira-WitherKay Well said above . Especially the reminder that an sx is a good value for extremely low money BUT it is still a beginner guitar . Or lets just say budget guitar . And yes i even as a test used an sx tele at one of my pro gigs and it did the job , BUT don't think you won't notice the huge leap in quality of feel and tone and playability if you had to suddenly pick up a usa fender tele after playing the sx . So yes they great guitars if you on low budget or want a back up guitar in case of emergency but for as good as they are they will never replace good instrument . Hope how i wrote that makes sense, cos i'm not slating them but don't want anyone to have illusions it can replace a top end fender or gibson even after mods . ?
ZarK For the money I'd go for either a Yamaha Pacifica 112 or a medium/higher-end Cort such as the G254... I'd take either of these over a SX or Squire. The standard Wilkinson bridge and pups in the G254 and other similar Cort guitars are worth more than the what these guitars sell for second-hand... Excellent value-for-money imo.
flatfourfan I dunno, my old SX was leaps and bounds above a squire anyday of the week. Pacifica is a good buy, but I've never seen one under R1500-00.
guidothepimmp Imho a good setup can get most guitars playing comfortably and well. What you can do with hardware is also virtually endless (at a cost)..what you can't do is be sure of the quality lumber So imo, as long as the fiddle is of sounf construction, well put together, and lively sounding, it should be ok.. I have heard lemon usa fenders that are toneless and that is prob a dud piece of tonewood.. That's not to say these brands are equals, because they are not. But for the beginner intermediate guy on the street on a budget, nothing wrong with sx provided it is well put together. The old saying applies here, play a bunch after one another, you'd be amazed at the differences you hear, then go with what sounds and feels best. I agree on yamaha and cort though.. The hardware is decent for the price point
DDR4LYF I just picked up a strat shape SX and I am enjoying it immensely. First six string electric (usually on bass) but I am liking it a lot!
