I need some advice on fret work, my Cort guitar has dead spots located, strategically I might add, at the 14th fret on the A string, and the 16th fret on the G string. I have tried different string gauges, but to no avail. The truss rod is set up correctly with a clearance of about 6 or 7mm at the 12th fret, with the action being quite high for the guitar, and it has not helped.When the note is played it is always a half-step sharp, and very muted. Any help would be sweet (pronounced like the guys in Dude where's my car).

It's the next fret being too high - in other words the 15th fret on the A string, and the 17th fret on the G string. File those down a touch just in those spots and all should be right with the world again.

I hav a cort x2 and i also had major problems with fret buzz, i eventually got it right but my action is also very high,like 6mm at the 12th fret. Is that common with cort?

Not specifically a Cort thing, no. The Korean guitars are better than most, but the cheaper ones made elsewhere in Asia tend to vary a bit like anyone else's. My G-VT was perfect out of the box and my Earth 900 needed just a quick touch up of one note to get a very low action. Then again, I've seen an entire batch of the EVLs with back-bowed necks (but I suspect that they were stored in a hot warehouse).

I would not consider just raising the action 'getting it right' ?
Do yourself a favor and do/get a fret job. This will entail while the strings are off and the truss rod relaxed:
- all the frets seat properly
- there are no low frets and no high frets, just a cylindrical (or conical) face over the fret tops
- the frets are all equal curvature without flat spots
- the frets are nice and shiny again.
Then, if the truss rod is set correctly, the action should be able to get back to between 1 (very low) and 2.5mm (rather high) depending on taste.

Thanks alan,u seem to be a very knowledgeable guitar guy! @gearhead, so,does that fret job mean i hav to take it to someone? and how much will that cost? im not as wealthy as id like to be,haha, so i mite hav to save up then!

Count on R500+ and take it to a place the forum knows. When in doubt if you can trust the guy, post first.

I should have asked this earlier, but did you have the truss rod adjusted? Might just be as simple as slacking it off a bit and bringing the action back down.

That's high alright. The action of any of my guitars is lower than that, and I play acoustics with big old 13s on them.

Can you recall where the buzzing was? At certain specific places? In a range of frets?

How did you raise the action? By raising the bridge or by adjusting the truss rod?

Okay,so i read some articles, figured wat the truss rod does, then had a look, it was super tight!so i adjusted it like the articles said and managed to lower the action to about 3.5mm at the 12th, is that better? i am planning on getting a fret job done next year as this is a second hand axe and im not sure wat the previous guy did to did, so,im just gonna go play now!

Playing is always better than fiddling, but you are likely to find that 3.5mm is still very high for an electric. Just don't beat yourself up for not being able to do high speed weedly-weedly Vai style solo's. Oh and congrats on a successful thread hijack ?

That's a lot better - Well done. When you take it in for the fret job, the luthier will sort out all the setup stuff properly.
