Keeping your beloved gear safe
D-Man
Hey all,
Just the other day we were robbed. They took both my guitars and anything else that looked expensiv. This is South Africa so it was bound to happen but I just wish I still had my guitars. I'm sure all of us love our gear beyond their monetary value so how can we make sure that no-one will be able to steal our gear out of our own homes?

Bummer man. That just sucks.
It's a nightmare idea for me. I try to keep my no.1 guitar hidden when I'm not playing it, but nothing that an experienced burglar wouldn't see though. Just hopefully they'd have their hands to full of other stuff to search further and then take a heavy guitar.
I've thought that it must be possible to make a decent hiding place for certain treasures, including fave guitars. But it's very difficult to do when renting. Also it can't be so inaccessible (the ceiling comes to mind) that you can't get at the gear, or have environmental conditions that will destroy the instrument. Something like a locked trap-door in the floor covered by a rug.
Also, according to a guy who interviewed a bunch of housebreakers in Pretoria Central (I could be wrong about which prison) for his criminology PHD was told by the burglars that they mostly got some kind of inside info, usually from domestic workers. This doesn't of course mean that you should distrust your domestic worker or that this information is even volunteered by them where information is gotten this way, just that it's probably best that no one else knows where you hide your guitars.
Really sad to hear you lost your gear. Is it insured at least?

Perhaps build a cabinet to store your guitars in.
Hidden doors to slide in the cases, distraction doors on the front liek a liquor cabinet or book case. They go for the obvious, not realising there's treasure in the back.
Other option is to dig out a cellar room with hidden door, clean it yourself & never let the maid know it's there. By then you know you're verging on paranoia.

Yeah. I think we have some sort of insurance that covers it. Coz my parents are putting claims in for the guitars
