Sad indeed that Gibson pulled out of the country. Should you wish to get a Gibson model, there are a few around in the market. There is a person who import Gibson in Cape Town. Check out Guitar Experience in Cape Town on the net.
Tokai copies may be an alternative, unless you want the real thing, and pay more of course.
Yes Vic, but who can afford a couple of million rand for a 1950's Gibson? ?
So you've got to buy a copy. But Gibson's copies are too expensive for most people. And Tokai have been making copies for longer. ?
From the Wikipedia Gibson Les Paul Page:
"Although troublesome, there were overseas copycat companies that produced very high quality Les Paul and Stratocaster imitations. In fact, during the 1970s and early 1980s, a Japanese company, Tokai, made superb replicas of the 1957–59 Les Paul designs. [and they still do]
"These replicas were marketed to satisfy the demand for vintage spec Les Pauls ... and effectively became forebears of Gibson made re-issues, Historic Collections and VOS models."
And they're still equivalent to those models, just much cheaper.
