Just need some input. Now, I know there are quite a few Afrikaners in here somewhere. What I would like to know is can we have a list of good boeremusiek bands/artists listed here. Old and new. I dont knwo too many but have heard stuff that I really think is good. So, let's have it. Register under a another name if you must (so's noone will know who you are).

I have heard people say that sometimes when I am drinking brandy and coke by the bucket load I like to listen to "Die Baardskeerdersbos Orkes". I can not confirm the rumour though.

While I will not exactly call myself a fan, or admit openly that I like it, two bands that I do know of is the "Radio Kalahari Orkes" and off course David Kramer.

Btw, David Kramer rocked OppiKoppi quite a good few years back ('98) harder than most of the hard rock and metal acts could achieve that year. ?

I would not categorize David Kramer's or Anton Goorsing's music as boeremusiek ...perhaps light afrikaans or something...both are excellent story tellers through their music.
Die Klipwerf orkes is real boeremusiek.

Here we go guys, I'm not a boertjie, but jislaaik, this was one of the first few songs I played when I was a kid in my 1st (or maybe 2nd band). Think I was in Std 8. Three guys in same class, and a fourth from a school up the road!

We played this version, but it's a Proudly Souf Efrikan song by Nico Carstens, here's a clip by The Shadows......

Visit your nearest music store and ask the storekeeper to advise you. You may even want to listen to a few boeremusiek CD's (those with concertina or accordion as the main instrument. ) ? ?

Hi Aubs...Nico Carstens is a real master when it comes to playing (and arrangeing). And Zambesi was a good one for the Shads !

Absolutely.....the reason I posted The Shadows version was purely to show the amazing influence Nico's music had. Nico's original version was played on the concertina, (or perhaps the accordion?) that to me was, like you said earlier, the REAL Boeremusiek!!! (And of course, this being a Guitar forum.....hahahaha.....just kidding)

Have you ever heard of an old guy Chris Blignaut? I think he does the original version of Ou Ryperd - don't know if it's a standard or his composition. I can't listen to him for hours but I think if you're in the mood this is the guy to listen to for simple Afrikaans folk music. I think that he is to Modern Afrikaans music what Doc Watson is like to, perhaps, country? The roots kind of thing ..Theres also the Briel sisters apparently - never heard them though.

Also roots stuff from the 40's and 50's.(Frans and Sannie Briel)..... Their best remembered song is "Een Aand op die Trein na Pretoria".Do you click now ?

As I've said somewhere else on this forum, I love boeremusiek - it swings like crazy.
I played in a boereorkes in the army and during my year of session work in late '70s I was booked to play rythm guitar on two boereorkes albums. I can't remember the name of the bands. I think I was given a credit under the name Piet Marais. We did one-take stuff with no overdubs. I was paid a session fee whilst the rest of the orkes were paid in royalties. I enjoyed every minute. I don't listen to it much now though.
Although not strictly boeremusiek, Danie Niehaus and I entered (as a kind of joke) in an annual competition, called "Crescendo" run by the ATKV in the early '80s and won the group section and came second overall. The concert was held in the Pretoria Opera House and we were backed by The Gerry Bossman Orchestra - with brass, strings the whole toot. Great fun.
I have no idea why I kept being drawn into the Afrikaans music scene since my command of Afrikaans is dismal.
Does anyone know of a boereorkes in the Durban area? I might be tempted to play sakie sakie again. ?

Well, if you get it going I reckon you gonna make a killing in holiday season down the coast.

Yip. There used to be plenty of this stuff. Nowadays, I dont hear too much balke toe/langarm/binne boud stuff. Every time I look at MK channel (which I imagine should cater for the Afrikaans folk scene), I just get the impression that the guys are trying to transplant the heart of another animal into the local music scene. Not sure if the body is rejecting it but for me the rhythm seems a little out of order. Nonetheless, everybody is having fun which is what matters, ne?

I've been to many an Afrikaans wedding and agree with Pete - the old Boeremusiek ROCKS! I can sit and gaze at the people dancing for hours. They are so light footed and so in synch with each other - its a mystery to me! I think you have to learn from young to dance like that. I'm sure this music will never die out. Surely. ?

Oh NO!!!! I have at some friend's home in Polokwane (Pietersburg), this is pure Grave-yard music, never ever heard anything so depressing. But my friends Dad insisted we listen to his favourite stuff... ? ??? Geez, what an afternoon, will never forget that experience!!!

In my book, definitely not Boeremusiek, which is happy, sokkie-sokkie stuff!

Yea not really boeremusiek, boeremusiek is heavy on banjo, accordion and concertina, with not much vocals, if any.

Therse some good boere you guys must listen to. Hansie Roodt was a very skilled and good guitarist. Listen to "Warm Snare and kitaar kielie" Nico van Rensburg on concertina and Manie Bodensteyn can't be ignored. Class players. Flippie van Vuuren is also another multi instrument player. Japie Loubser also comes to mind. One thing that the guitarists of boere can do properly is chord progressions and keep rhythm. ( sorry to say but a lot of lead guitarists seems to ignore that part of playing guitar) Any band that plays tight sounds good to my ears regardless of the type of music they are playing.

Valie..well said......you call back a few great musos here. I agree 100%. These guys are excellent.
