Yup. The normal brown or cherry finishes tend to obscure the grain, while stain accentuates it. It's also more reddish than it should be.
Also, look next to the bridge in this pic:
You can see the pick gouges that have been finished over - and they have the soft edges of a varnish.
It also looks like the tailpiece anchors have been drilled out and filled with dark wood (or maybe its big washers).
