Used a Creative 4GB for 2 years in Afghanistan, bumpy roads, dust, etc. etc. no problems BUT my suggestion is get a Blackberry/iPhone or similar. Then you only carry one doodad that covers calls, sms, email and entertainment (mp3 and video). Only problem is if you fly a lot the flight attendants will give you a slap for listening to your phone in-flight ?
What were you doing in Afghanistan? Must put South Africa's problems in perspective.
ipods are easily available second hand. That's nice. They way they actually handle music is really frustrating. I need to really sit down with a "how to use your ipod" book - which is a bit ridiculous really since I'm not at all technophobic. But it's just that opaque. I never know when something that I have on my PC is actually going to end up on my ipod at the moment.
An iphone seems a really brilliant way to go at the moment - ipod, phone, big-screen gps, organiser, and computer. It's real value seems to lie in the fact that so many geeks have them, that they're constantly banging out new software for them. As JF Jr says though, you might have problems on the plane.
