Who else here plays jazz, and what type of jazz?
Sean
Couple of folk I believe. Norio iirc is keen on jazz as well as MikeM.
Welcome to the forum ?

Thanks. Not that I see myself as a pro with Jazz. I am not so strong in the lead guitar department, but I am quite keen on jazz chords. In fact, I like to "jazzify" normal songs (if I can call it that), rarther than being a progressive jazz guitarist.

I love Jazz, but not the hectic old time stuff, more the modern jazz fusion kind of stuff
Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny , Benson etc
Now to play the stuff ?
I tried on one of the weekly comps on the sunset, but I need to study some jazz scales first.

I love listening to jazz piano - Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson ...
MikeM
I think it'll be more accurate if we say that I AIM to play jazz hehehe..

I enjoy playing and listening to jazz, Kenny Burrell mostly ?

I like, but don't play, the more hectic Jazz Rock fusion like McLaughlin and Holdsworth.

I like to think that I play jazz - but I suppose it is more a jazz ballad style - nice fat chords. Of course I love Charlie Christian, Django Reinhard and Wes Montgomery. I also love the big band stuff - Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

I really love Jazz old and new John Coltrain, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker Dizzy Gelespie, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawenul, Chic Corea, Stanley Clark, George Duke, I could fill this page with the names of the Jazzmen I really admire. I even tried playing Jazz for about a decade. My only problem is that, apart from the rare exception like Mclaughlin, I don't really appreciate Jazz Guitar. I guess I'm a frustrated Jazz pianist in a Blues guitarists body. BTW I Love Larry Carlton but that's because I consider him to be a Bluesman more than a Jazzman. One of the finest blues solos that I know is BP Blues off his Album Last Night. I can hear a storm of disagreement thundering across cyberspace but hey this is my weird take on things musical.

This "jazz" you guys speak off, can it be spread on bread?

yeah i play jazz ...... and professionally, at the local casino's and other gigs in jhb and around the world in fact ............ although i'm labeling myself as an acoustic world musician........ but if you in jhb come catch a show ........ i work either as a soloist which then tends to be more world music ( flamenco /classical/latin based with a few jazz standards) but i also work with a jazz vocalist .... doing the guitar and voice jazz standard repetoire............. aspire to the martin taylor school of playing...where i play melody /bass lines and chords simultaneously also i have just recorded a cd of jazz standards with my singer ...... and next we will be recording the jazz album i have composed ( very melodic jazz... bordering more on katie melui /nora jones type jazz than coltrane or experimental jazz)
but i perform with my vocalist at least a few times a week in jhb so come to a show......
oh i also teach jazz ....... and multi part playing technique..........
let me know where you perform and i'll come check you out
peace and light

Jazz can be spread on anything and always tastes good. 8)

Interesting that some of you play piano as well, and that you are more comfortable in jazz on the piano. Same with me. One of my favourite jazz CD's is Cool from Bob James and Earl Klugh.

Too early on a Monday morning to be talkin' about that Jazz... Monday mornings require upbeat pop.

Can't play it..but i certainly love it!
I quite like the big band stuff (Duke E, Count B, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller etc) (Strangely, i have been enjoying the SA Navy Band's version of "A nightingale sang in Berkley Square" recently), but i really prefer listening to fusion guys (Miles Davis, J McLaughlin, Weather Report, Return to Forever, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Brett Garsed etc.)

I think I first started getting slowly into jazzy/rock stuff when I listened to "Blood, Sweat and Tears" (not really jazz, but yeah,), I like the "Funky Jazz" music like Spyro Gyra, Dave Grusin, and Andy Narell, Pat Metheney and I love Keith Jarrett......
I'm not really into the old 50s 60s style heavy jazz.......
Do I play jazz??.......trying to get into playing Spyro Gyra....... ?

I love the easy listening sort of Jazz. I like it's "free" style. It sounds like the guy's just mosing around town and making decisions of where to go as he goes along. That stuff's awesome.
Ja, playing it is something else ?
