It's real. Sometimes called Tibetan (or Mongolian) throat singing. It has been said that the really skilled can create four-part harmonies. Bobby McFerrin often does it live in a section of his song Drive.

Saw this first in Germany a few years back - was the weirdest thing, I kept looking for the strange wind instrument hidden somewhere by the band, finally I just had to accept that it was the singer making those sounds!
