I wonder if anyone can help
A friend of mine who is a building contractor has been tasked to fit 'Acoustic Panels' in one of the rooms he is building.
Where would he get this kind of stuff?
Could it be similar to panels in studios?

Is the purpose for sound control in the room or soundproofing? What kind of application is it (completely different approaches if it's a club or a conference centre)?

It will be a confrerence/ Lecture room. He needs to clad the back wall with these panels.

Worst case, I can ask at faculty when I go on Tuesday.. They definately know.

OK. It's sound control then. And mostly in the mid to high range. Panels will do it without the need for any bass trapping (although I might look into putting a tube trap in each corner for a little bass control for multimedia presentations). He can look into mounting rigid fibreglass panels on wooden frames that essentially space them away from the walls an inch or two. He can speak to Owens-Corning for the panels and he will also need to look into getting an acoustically transparent cloth to cover the panels with (speaker cloth works great).

If the budget allows and the client wants a really great looking solution, the Auralex range is available with a variety of looks and colours, but works out far more expensive. The one downside is that the foam panels are not as durable, and can end up looking ratty quickly in public traffic areas like lecture rooms.

The ceiling panels (I'm presuming he will be suspending a ceiling) and a carpet, will already make a big difference over a bare room.

Hmm... yup, seems like OC have pulled out locally. Isover now seem to have taken over locally http://www.isover.co.za. Look at the glasswool ranges.

Subsonic acoustics (acousticpanels.co.za) seem to do all the usual types of things you expect from an acoustics company - along the line of Auralex, so their Mellosorbers should work too.
