They are little boxes with a sponge or similar material in them. You soak them, wring off the excess water and put it in the case. For acoustics they are usually built so that they fit into the sound hole.
Where are you going to be storing the guitars? If it's on the highveld, for example, a humidifier is a pretty good idea for the acousti and bags of silica gel (which will dry out the air even more) are a no no!
If the guitar is plywood then you may get away with out using a humidifier. If it has a solid wood top or is all solid wood then a humidifier is probably a good idea. And you should keep it topped up.
Might be a good idea to take the guitars out every once in a while, examine them and have a bit of a play.
