I've gone from wanting to replace pickups to freeing up money for a whole new giutar. (Well it's actually my parents' money but what the heck)
So I've been given a price range of "anything below R3000". I'm looking for good quality. I usually play rock/metal but I like flexibility. And I love my solos and distortion. And obviously I want something that looks killer..................................................Any suggestions?

Look second hand for definate. Where're you situated? Maybe you could get someone more knowledgable to check it out to make sure it's fine?
Maybe you could score a nice Squier Standard with a bucker in the bridge (NOT bullet/affinity) or an Epi SG or Les Paul...

Check out the Grant Les Paul that Giggsy is selling...
MikeM
IF he's selling it in that range DEFINATELY!

I live in Centurion
I would prefer something brand new to be honest. What do you think I can get for R3000 in terms of pickups, body shape and wood

If you can make the trip, go to TOMS and get an Ibanez.

Basically anything, just of lower quality. Check out some shops. Preferably wait for specials.

Wicked! Thanks
Just out of interest, What are the starting prices on decent 12 string acoustics and resonators?

The Yamaha Pacifica's a great first electric, with the 112 having an HSS layout. Better than the equivalent Squires IMO, and you should be able to find one for under 3K. I've seen some on places like Gumtree for under 2K 2nd hand & hardly played.
Unless you're desperate to have "Stratocaster" on the headstock, go with one of these. They're also decent for upgrading.

Buying 2nd-hand is great because you can end up paying half of what a guitar is worth, just because it's 6 months old and the buyer actually realises he wanted something else, or is upgrading.
I've bought all my guitars like this and still have them all. The only issue with any of them has been the odd nick or scratch or general worn-in look but they sound great. The only guitar that doesn't sound great is my Starfire and that's because it's just a kak guitar, new or 2nd-hand ?
In your price range, for rock/metal, I'd highly recommend a nice Ibby. Even if you don't like how they look, for the price, they're amazing guitars!
Buying new just seems, to me, that you get so much less guitar for your money. Great if you've got R16k spare and know exactly what you want but maybe not worth it if you're looking for an upgrade and still learning about what's out there.

Thoughts:
You want to play metal/hard-rock, right?
My buddy shreds on a pacifica (I have one that's more like a vintage strat), but they're not all metal guitars. Look for ones with two humbuckers if you go that route. Also, if you go second hand for under R3K, make sure it's one with a model number starting at least with a 3. My buddy's is a 712R, I think. Mines a 904. The 112 is a great guitar, but it's very much like a traditional strat. You won't find a metal ready pacifica before you hit models starting with 3 probably.
If you want a new guitar for metal, I think ESP's Ltd. series is a great way to go. From the ground up metal machines.
Otherwise if you want a superstrat - a strat-type guitar built for shred - you can't go wrong with Ibanez, and some of the better Corts also seem to be ok.
I wouldn't shrink from buying 2nd hand if I were you. You'll get a lot more guitar for your money. Plus a guitar that's a little played in will sound a little bit better. 2nd hand you could get a really good ESP Ltd. or Ibanez, or even a Jackson soloist if you're crazy lucky (they were out of demand for a while and a buddy of mine picked one up for peanuts).

If you were to consider second hand, this also looks like a great deal:

Can't see you getting anything new for 3k that comes remotely close...imo

The best part about buying 2nd hand ... is that if you buy wisely, you can recover all your money when you sell it when you need to upgrade ?

+1
At the store you're paying more than the guitar's actually worth. 2nd hand, you pay it's value, which is likely to stay more-or-less the same, or even increase if you're lucky.

Gee,
I never really looked at second hand guitar that way. I've seen some amazing 2nd hand guitars and I don't think I'll regret buying one. Thanks a lot
