Headphone advice

Jack-Flash-Jr

I'm looking to upgrade my headphones to a pair that are reasonable quality and reasonable price - make that mindblowing quality and reasonable price ?
Don't need skull candy... (although why not look good?)

MikeM

Skull Candy is like... Hmmm no can't even liken it to any guitar brand. It's a good brand. BRAND. Not product.

What's your budget?

guitarboy2828

sennheiser!!!! ?

MikeM

Sennheiser has a wide range ?

What's the application? Open or closed back (Does it have to eliminate noise and not bug people around you or can it leak noise in and out?)

Sennheiser has both in a wide budget range ? And are typically good

Leak noise out? What do you listen to?

MikeM

Well headphones mainly leak out muffled treble so it doesn't sound that nice.

Sean

Aaah, okay ?

Heath

Seinhessier , they are brilliant imo

Take a look at Grado labs stuff too. Said to better bang for buck comapred to Senheisser and others. Not cheap, though.

Http://www.gradolabs.com - they also have a local agent in Durban.

MikeM

I agree with Grado Labs ? Also Denon if you can get em (I couldn't find locally ☹ ) Audio Technica..

The list goes on ? You can swindle and AWESOME deal on Sennheisers if you can find someone that does not follow the 40% markup :?

Oooh 15% discount ?

All good choices ? I have the HD555s. Once burnt in they sound exactly like the 595s (Take note they take as least 200 hours to be fully burnt in)

Fostex RP series.

+1 on the Fostex. I love the sound of the Sennheisers and have gone through quite a few sets through the years, but the decent ones are expensive and the cables on most models break easily. Fostex are made for using - heavy duty cables on one side only and they take punishment.

Closed back are best if you might be doing any recording - they keep the leakage both ways to a minimum.

Wow - need to do some follow up research... but budget not huge problem (that said, let's not get carried away!), needs to be comfortable for extended wearing, can leak sound... It's for late night practicing as well as recording, mp3 and guitar amp simultaneous playback. Sennheiser sounds like the consensus... oh wait... Fostex... will look into them... any tips on suppliers?

AlanRatcliffe

I'm not sure who the importers are, but you should find them in any store with a halfway decent recording section. They have a few models across a range of prices. And yeah they are comfortable for extended use (unlike the Rolands).

Headphones are available from http://www.bhphotovideo.com from which I've bought plenty of camera gear over the years. Very reliable and with good return policies. Based on long experience with SA retail, I'm not even going to look before saying that it's cheaper than here.
