My 60's AC30

I drove to Oudshoorn and back from CT one Saturday to buy this amp. The only blemish is a small mark on the grill cloth. One alnico grey speaker and a pre-rola celestion greenback that was put in as a replacement.

I take it that it's the Top Boost with the 6 inputs? Does it have a plaque on the back saying a product of JMI/ Jennings Musical Instruments? Does it say what year it was manufactured?

Whatever it is it's a real treasure! I'm jealous! ?

How does it sound with this speaker combo compared to the blue alnicos ?

Wow! A friend of a friend (long story) has a similar one, except with 2 Alnicos and it still sounds amazing! Suprisingly not very different to the new AC30CC with the Alnicos considering how differently they're made (Handwired vs PCB), perhaps a bit smoother?
His does have less bottom-end than the new one, but I'd expect that for 40+ year old speakers. Voxes just have that "mojo" about their tone. Dark yet jangly, clean yet crunchy if you dig in.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the tone with that speaker combination like Joey asked.

I dunno. I've heard a few AC30s with other speakers and while there were some great tones, they all missed something compared to the Blues, which do "chime" brilliantly, but still have low end. My 2c.

I can't really compare the tone to an AC30 with 2 blues, because I have never played one, new or vintage.

I've got the new ac30, the cc with 1x12" celestion (not the alnico blue tho), I also play through the ac30 cc with the 2x12" alnico blues. Both amps sound great!! I am happy with my celestion, not looking to change to alnico blue anytime soon.. Unless I get a deal I can't turn down of course

Actually it's not the best idea to change to a Celestion Alnico Blue in a single 12" 30W amp. This is because the Blue is only rated at 15W, which means you're gonna blow it apart in a 30W on it's own. It works so well in an AC30 2x12 because it's 2X 15W speakers = 30W. The AC30 itself actually makes around 33W at full chat, so it's even possible to blow both speakers in a 2x12 AC30 (ask Bian May). I've seen it done by a few guys and it aint pretty! ☹ Especially when the speakers cost as much as the Blues do. ?

For the 1x12 AC30 I'd suggest the Celestion Alnico Gold, which is a new version of the Blue, but rated at 50W so it will handle the power of the amp properly. It's a great speaker, but it costs a fortune.
