Keira-WitherKay hi all... this is way off guitar topic... but my partner and i need to get a portable air conditioner for her townhouse in pta the heat is incredible in the upstairs bedroom..... so anyone in jhb /pta area in the aircon biz....??? we would maybe like a quote ....and some advice as to whats good and what to avoid........... or has anyone had any experience with this.......... ? why we thinking of a portable is that in winter the opposite occurs and downstairs is freezing so thinking we can buy one and use it upstairs in summer cooling and downstairs in winter warming hehehhe to us it sounds like the most cost effective way ...........also the rooms are relatively small so no need for a monster machine that must cool a huge area......... so opinions and options please........ thanks peace and light Keira
MikeM It is sad that homes are designed like this in an age like ours. I suffer so horribly during the winter, I literally have a heater on 24/7.. A cheap option would be to look at getting an air cooler (humidifier type) and a heater, as portable air conditioners (heat pumps) are quite pricey.. Another option would be to look at double glazing the windows downstairs and tinted windows upstairs. This would be the "green" route. I am not sure on the cost of this though and it is a more permanent long term solution so not sure if that is what is wanted.. Hope you find something satisfactory ? Btw ygpm..
lindsmuse We bought a portable air con for upstairs in PTA as well - upstairs was actually a loft and completely open - no doors. So the area was too large for this aircon to cool down. We hung drapes to try cordon the area off but that also didn't help - (one of the reasons we moved to Cape - the stifling heat) - but it also gets so hot here! But luckily the room that needs cooling- the main studio, has doors and can be closed off. So we put the pipe out the window - instead of gouging holes in the wall etc - and it works like a charm. If int. let me know - and if permitted? I can give you the brandname ..
Keira-WitherKay thanks guys... @ mike yeah moneys not an issue.... i have priced the air cons (portable) and they around R5000 for a few models ...seems the going price and thats affordable..... i have tried an aircooler before and not happy with it ... anyway i'd rather buy well once @ lindmuse yeah sure send the info or pm me if you feel odd posting in open forum..... but i'm kinda now doing the market research to whats gonna work .......... and the room we wanna cool down is the bedroom and it's not that big ... not like it's the entire top floor anyway thanks for the input and hoping to hear some more input if anyones got experience with this.... thanks again
Rudolf Wish I could help more as I am in the business but our interests have unfortunately shifted considerably far away from household applications. If you were trying to get the state theatre to -25'C I would have been usefull. Hehehe I would really consider Mike's suggestions, it's always the better option to try and do it the "green" way. Not because it's enviromentally friendly as such but because it's always much cheaper (leccy bill) and healthier believe it or not. The portable aircons are notorious for being particularly bad when it comes to humidifying, you can help alleviate the problem by putting bowls with water in front of it and what not but guess what..it's probably gonna ensure a double up in your medical bills due to colds and flew and and and anyways. Not that normal split units are much better but for some reason really not as bad. If there's a way to just help force the hot air out the top and get fresh air from outside in the bottom the place will be considerably cooler in no time. And of course keeping the sun away. Finally, yes the portable aircons do work as long as you condition yourself to not expect it to do wonders. Buy a little too big and all should be ok. More than that, I'm afraid I can't help. ?
Jack-Flash-Jr Embrace the heat ? Nah, not really... but do be careful of aircon addiction and clean the filters regularly otherwise you're asking for lung discomfort and whatnot.
AlanRatcliffe lindsmuse wrote let me know - and if permitted? I can give you the brandname .. Posting aircon brand names is fine. In fact posting guitar products brand names and models is fine unless you work for/are the distributor/manufacturer or an endorser.
baseline Hi Keira. I bought a portable unit for our office, it was great in the beginning, but it soon developed problems, i took it back and it was replaced, now three months later the “new” one is doing the same thing, it might be better to get a spilt unit, that sits outside and the blower is mounted inside.
