Modal books

cain

okay guys

different topic ? Which books would explain all aspects off modal theory to me properly. I have videos but i want
some books that is nice for reference at all times.

I find my scales book by Troy Stetina to be a perfect companion. I pick a mode, find some backing tracks and get on with it -- nothing can replace what you learn from application.

However, I'd love to find a book that goes more in-depth too! Probably need to look at some jazz books to find what we're looking for.

Hi Norio,

Might i suggest the Guitar Grimoire books for modal theory. Here's the link http://www.guitargrimoire.com/products.htm
Check it out! I kid you not, you will be impressed. These books are hardcore. I have all three and i can happily say that they have helped me no end. These are books that you can keep going back to and they explain concepts really well. The book on scales and modes explains everything that anybody needs to know about scales. Its about 400 pages of scales, modes (including crazy messed up eastern scales like the pelog, hirojoshi and a load of indian scales) and then some...

Thanks man, I'm checking that link out now.

I really enjoy Frank Gambale's video - "Modes, No More Mystery". Very good stuff.

Hi Norio,

Speakin' of Frank Gambale, i happened to see an article of his in a "Guitar Techniques" magazine back from Jan 97 and it is awesome. The man is a walking encyclopedia of triads and modal theory. And he's got a couple of new videos out (besides the one you have on your blog). He no longer endorses Ibanez and now plays a Yamaha (and he's bald and has a white beard--Not very unlike Lee Sklar).
Also, another player i fancy a lot is Lee Ritenour. Haven't heard anybody mention his name on this forum. For that matter, haven't heard anybody mention Tommy Emmanuel either. Check out Tommy Emmanuel's version of "Classical Gas". Enjoy : )

Can we trouble you for some more links ?

For that matter, haven't heard anybody mention Tommy Emmanuel either.

I think I mentioned him somewhere in the players forum. I'm more electric oriented in my listening and playing habits, but he is one acoustic player who is pretty mind-boggling and I find I listen to him more often than the others I have. Not only is he an amazing guitarist, but he's pretty damn funny too.

Speaking acoustic players, maybe I should throw the following into the pot too: Adrian Legg, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Michael Hedges, Django Reinhard, Paco De Lucia, Chet Atkins.

Speaking about Chet, will someone please remind me of the song of his used in the Cheaper by The Dozen movie when they all go searching for the one kid that ran off?

I used to have it (long before the movie came out) but, as usual, did something stupid and lost my entire MP3 collection. (This happens at least yearly :/)

AlanRatcliffe

They used Classical Gas didn't they? I don't think it was Chet's version though

NorioDS

Yup, that's the one!

I knew it by a different name. Maybe Chet's version is different to the original?

Aha, I found the version I'm more familiar with:

And the original is by one Mason Williams. Gorgeous composition, really!

Sorry Alan...my bad...didn't know it was already up in the forum.

...I certainly understand the practical application of modes better after this unique approach to the modes. Like he explains, modes cannot be imposed on a progression but are dictated by the tonal center of the progression. Check it out, I have applied it to numerous progressions and it works every time. Don't expect a long lecture about the starting and ending notes of scales etc, expect a really simple yet profound explanation of the modes based on popular music. I have never managed to get this business of modes to sink in until watching this DVD. Desi also has some DVDs on the pentatonic scale, Chord progressions, CAGED system, and also a Book covering all of the material from the DVDs.
