Heya all!
I have thought a lot, and came to the conclusion that I'm not selling my RG. It's the perfect guitar for me, except for two things:
- It has an active bridge pickup,
and
- It has no neck pickup.
So I realized that it's pointless to buy a new guitar to fix those issues. Changing the bridge pickup is a simple matter, but as the guitar has no routing for a neck pickup, and it's rear routed, adding a neck pup provides quite a challenge.
What do you think? Should I do it myself somehow, or should I take it to a professional (if there's someone willing to do it here)? It seems like a daunting task to me. On the other hand, I suppose it'd be expensive to make a pro do it, and I'm not sure at all that there are so qualified luthiers out here (sure, Finland has fine luthiers - but I really can't afford someone like Ruokangas do it).
And last, what neck pup do you recommend? I'm planning a Seymour Duncan SH-4 for the bridge, and I'd either like a single coil or a single-coil sized humbucker (just for looks ?).
Thanks in advance,
Frans

Take it to a pro. Routing a pickup cavity is easy to do if they have the tools, templates and experience, but it's not something I would recommend you try if you're new to the whole mod thing. Drilling a hole from the neck pup cavity to the bridge is easy with an aircraft bit - you just drill from the neck pocket through the neck cavity to the bridge.
As for humbucker sized single-coil pickups - any of the humbucker sized P90s will work. Fralin and Lollar for something more polite, the Gibson P94 for a more traditional P90 raunch. DiMarzio also do the Bluesbucker, which is a humbucker that sounds like a P90.

Well, I've built a guitar, but it was top routed, so I really hadn't be so careful as with this.
Oh, and I was looking for single-coil sized humbuckers - not the opposite. ?
