Why I Would Rather Gouge My Own Eyes Out Than Play An Ibanez

It seems that there is always a "Fashion" guitar at any period of time. It was the Strat in Buddy Holy, Shadows time, Kramer when Eddy was god, Hamer, Jackson, Charvel and, for a few years now, Ibanez. The whole Artist/Instrument thing creates an aura of excitement that inspires people to pick up the guitar and play. It's all good - Muddy Water's Telecaster, Jimmy Page's Les Paul, Satriani, Vai et al. What an incredible instrument that can be used in so many genres of music and in so many ways. You may well start shredding in your teens and early twenties and end up playing country or classical twenty years later.

Strats - out of style in mid-'60s

Les Pauls - out of style in mid to late '80s

Teles... hmmm. Not so sure, but they don't seem to have been much of a deal in the late '50s and early '60s when everyone wanted Strats during the surf boom.

Maybe it varies with the genre or geographic area. Teles have pretty much been a fixture in country music. Just like the Martin D28 in bluegrass circles. Most of the hoity toity high end guitars that you see in that part of the musical world - like the Gallaghers that Doc Watson used, or Santa Cruz or Wayne Henderson's guitars - are based on pre-war D28s.

Most country players played Gretsches and Gibsons in the late '50s/early '60s. Only person I can think of in a big band from those days is Steve Cropper. Muddy was playing a Tele then but he was almost invisible to the public. Oh yeah. Also Johnny Cash's guitar player.

Actually I have a dag already. (Or maybe he has me -I sometimes wonder.) If I had to rely on him to cross the road safely, we'd both be 6ft under ages ago already... ?

Ooooh...my bad! Is he still alive? ?. I did enjoy Eddy very much when I was younger - I even got a Kramer!! (not easy in Zim where there was squat!). I haven't heard too much from him since the late '80s - there's my next mission - catch up with VH!!!
