I can picture it now - a blind man on a street corner busking with his battery powered amp and what he believes to be a Les Paul except it is an old 80 Ibanez copy of a Les Paul but he doesn't know this because the self mutilation that caused his blindness caused an infection that took away much of his hearing and the ensuing insanity took away his taste in music - yes I hear it now, he is playing strains of Peter Framton's "Show me the way".

I hear your point. But I never saw a pic of Miles Davis performing dressed like he was at the gym. I fully agree that you need to watch what you wear when you get older (Keith Richards somehow manages to still hip as an old rocker - but then, there's only one Keith Richards). A lot of people do a great job - usually by going towards suits (which even Clapton does a lot of the time).

Back to the whole guitar thing, I always thought cheaper Ibanez’s where good value. A friend of mine bought one brand new for R1500. The feel of the fret board wasn’t too far from my Gibson’s or my Vintage xx series, and it had an excellent sound for metal. However, I’ve never really been overly interested in them, partly because it’s almost impossible to tell them apart esthetically and they usually have these names with twice the letters than the alphabet. Have you ever heard people discussing them? “Oh yes, l love my CZZQQY666dqy custom”. “Well I just bought the ewe4q-CompensatorXXL Pro and it’s fantastic”. No! The only way to convey what model you have is by stating how much you paid for the thing. Secondly all the models I’ve played weren’t very versatile. It seems you have to buy a different model for every type of music you like. Again I won’t be able to tell you what models I’ve played because there’s no way to tell them apart.

As for Fenders, I love telecasters but why do strats still Exist? Even Fender realized that the strat was rubbish and was about to discontinue it and replace it with the Telecaster (which had the same unique tone as the strat but paired with another better pickup to make it more versatile) when a guy by the name of Hendrix took the stage at Woodstock. I think he thought the Stratocaster was rubbish too, because he smashed his to pieces and then proceeded to set it on fire. Unfortunately his entire audience was stoned out of their minds or tripping on acid and thought that was the best thing they ever heard. As a result over the following weeks Fenders Stratocaster sales went through the roof, outdoing all of Fenders other guitars. This makes the Stratocaster a testament to the power of marketing and the danger of drug use. The irony is that those who bought strats to be cool like Hendrix seemingly forgot that to be cool like him required them to smash their new purchase to pieces. Either way the strat became an icon overnight for all the wrong reasons.

So admittedly that does put me off Fenders a bit even though I own a Fender semi electric. But I just can’t stand all these media conditioned kids that want a strat but when you ask them why, they can’t give you a proper answer. Not when from a logical or any point of view other than the way it looks, it’s the telecaster that is the superior guitar. :?

Hmmm... Wasnt the tele the one being replaced by the more versatile and better designed strat?? Besides, when The voodoo child played his strat at Woodstock it had been in service for longer than a decade and had a well eastablished fan base already. Still, I want a tele so bad I can taste it... And a LP, and Es-335, and a Starcaster, and a Jem, and...

Yes the telecaster was originally conceived before the strat. I can’t be certain but I think it was first design around 1949. But when Hendrix played at Woodstock the strat had had an unsuccessful career thus far and was due to be replaced by an updated telecaster that featured the same unique pickup as the strat but was a more versatile guitar. Since that was the apparent flaw of the Stratocaster.

As for Eric Clapton Jeff Beck David Gilmore and Mark Knopfler(personal favourite), they are all iconic players who if you asked why they use strats I’m sure they could give you a damn good reason as to why they prefer Stratocasters over teles or anything els for that matter. But keep in mind that EC’s strat (the one he was most noted for, i.e. Blackie) was put together by himself using parts and pickups for a range of Fenders. So not exactly a standard strat is it? The same applies for mark knopfler and I think Beck (not sure about Gilmore). Anyway the point I was getting at is that kids today are gullible as to what guitar they want, in the sense that they all want strats, for no reasoning of their own and completely overlook the Tele. ?

Yea go re-research your history buddy.

EC bought 6 strats as they were cheap because of low sales. Fender had shitty sales in general, the tele was doing no better. Gibson was in control. He made Blackie and sent the others off to other guitarists, and the more versatile strat came back into the spotlight and has been THE single coil sound ever since.

Teles are awesome and have their place, but they're not strats.

I have seen guys do amazing things with Squire strats, so Strats they rock. PERIOD!
Strats is not for everyone, but they are legends in their own right! The same with Ibanez.

Actually Gibson wasn’t doing too well either their explorer model that they had invested so much time into had almost no sales and was considered a joke because it look too outlandish. Guitar stores where writing on them and using them as Signs for their stores. Then a few years later the SG was rejected by Les Paul himself as it was intended as a replacement/2nd version of the original. The companies that were supposedly doing well where brands like Rickenbacker. And yes EC did buy 6 strats, but he only used 3 of them in the initial construction of Blackie. Later however he added/changed parts of it with other fenders.

Haha a tele and strat are nothing alike IMO, so who is to say one is superior??? haha

Anyway... Svenddw... I am no media conditioned kid, I have played quite a few guitars in my life and they all have their ups and downs... The only fault I can find in a strat is the tremolo system... which without it takes something special away from a strat, I love them, the sound is the sweetest sound of all guitars (Thats what I (Yes I) Love)... It's not by fluke that many choose to play them.

It comes down to the player at the end of the day... A good/respectful player will NEVER bash any brand of guitars and their styles... show some respect... Talk about media conditioned...
