@Bob - If someone steps out in public and shouts something they know is going to upset a lot of people, then they do "reap what they sow", and I can only assume that is the response they wanted.
I was referring to the other side of the force here, the people who dish out condescending put downs to anybody who won't worship at the same altar as they do. There were several comments that made it quite clear that, in the opinion of the person making the comment, if you aren't impressed with Satriani and Vai (the two names most bandied around in these threads) then you're somehow lacking as a musician or in your appreciation of music.
This is what I was talking about when I said "as we sow shall we reap." I don't think those guys thought about what they might reap after they sowed, but I'm not surprised to see somebody trying to get up their noses after such a smug display.
Neither they nor we should be surprised at a vociferous response. And BTW, I was part of the discussion you mentioned and am neither an Ibanez player nor a Satriani fan (but I'm not stupid enough to think that just because I am not a fan no-one else is or could be).
But clearly we are surprised at the response. I'm not lying awake at night steaming over the cheek of people who think that because I don't get what they get then I must be short of practice or have some kind of dullness of the faculties. But when that nonsense started I said to myself that I wouldn't be surprised if somebody has a go at putting a burr up such self-righteous butts, and if there's a huge cry of "foul!" when that happens.
