Oky,so i guess that this must have been debated before?haha
The thing is,iv got a gt-8...and iv got a buyer for it,but i cant make up my mind, should i stay with multi effects,or should i go with singel effects and start building up a pedal board...?

Well it depends on what you want to do. If you are really into finding "your" tone and getting a true sound then go pedal board.
However multi's are so convenient. Especially the amp modeling and recording/software options...
If you have gotten used to switching effortlessly between patches then you may find the pedal board cumbersome

+1.
If you find you only use an effect or two at a time and the same kind of settings most of the time, single pedals may be a better way to go, as they can do the same thing with ease and give you the option of mixing and matching makes and models.
If you stack a lot of effects together or use a lot of different settings (like you would in a cover gig), a multieffect is usually going to be a lot easier to use. Plus very handy things to have around for a quick recording, practice, or as a gig backup for your amp/pedalboard.
In short, I think everyone should have both ?

I reckon the mutli is better as it has everything you may need. so you're never gassing for a new stomp box.

Hahahaha.....I am not surprised at all !!! There is no cure for, or end to the GAS thing. And being on this forum does not help one bit !!! ?
Gotta have it all!!! ?

I am gonna take a pretty hard stance on this.
Multi effects are without out a doubt worse, WHY would someone want something that emulates a sound, when you can go get the actual sound. A boss gt8 claims to have settings that make you sound like you have a mesa boogie or a vox, or a proco rat through a vox but really it sounds nothing like it, not even half as good. I said this on a topic yesterday, if you are a hobbyist then yes mlti effects are conveniant and fun, but if you are serious about guitar or want to take a more serious approach then do it properly, using proper effects. What pro guitarist uses a multi effects unit? All those noticable tones you here from pros are using mostly single pedals and actual amps. South Africa is one a the only countreys where i have seen guitarists using multi effects on a semi pro level. In the UK and USA it was almost a joke, or a taboo to use multi effects, kind of like a short cut.
So I would say definatley grow a proper pedal board of single units catered to your specific tastes, and preferances. It kinda brings out the guitar geek in you as well, which is pretty enjoyable. Just to note I have owned and used many multi effects units from a zoom 707 to a boss gt8 to a line 6 pod ripoff, and truthfully I rate them as awful, hoever there may be other views out there.

Nobody is forced to use amp modellers in a multi-fx unit. Also, any effects or chain, whether inside one box or many, can sound awful if set up by a boofhead. They could also sound really good if set up by somebody who knows what they're doing.
MIKA-the-better-one
agreed, you can make singles sound awful, but also sound amazing, multi effects have the same thing they can sound good, or bad, but never as good as the real thing. do you want a unit that does alot on an average level, or a single unit that has one primary function and does it well. You simply cannot get the sound of a tube screamer, mxr blue box, proco rat, big muff, fuzz face, ehx deluxe memory man from a digital multi effect thingy.

I myslef am STILL bouncing between multifx or stomps (sold my gt6 to get stomps about 1 year ago) BUT i tend to agree with what MIKA said. its all to sound LIKE a mesa or tubescreamer etc. why not get hte ral thing if you can afford to? ?

I Agree on the Emulation versus real issue....
GT8 will never achieve the tone of a real tube head/ cab mic'd up....
Sure most commercial multi effect units don't have killer overdrive tone...
But I doubt people buy GT8's for distortion / overdrive.
I wouldn't bash Multi effect units as a whole. They are the same as a bunch of single pedals just in 1 unit
with added control.
Something like a Boss GT8 has a certain versatility and easy of use (when used correctly)
which chaining a bunch of pedals won't have.

I don't think many people can... I chose a GT8 because of the sheer amount I could do with it, bang for the buck so to speak.

Dude, a few months ago I was contemplating the exact same thing. I had a GT8, sold it, and bought meself an overdrive, distortion, wah, flanger, chorus and a delay. Admittedly it wasn't cheap, but I'm much happier with the tone. Never really been much of an effects user anyway...

I am not complet;y destroyong multis, they have there place i guesse, but on any level above hobbysit are not right. I would nt reall say they are like alot of stompboxes combined, they are digital, where by alot of good stompboxes are analogue. You cant get a analogue delay sound from one, it replicates it a bit but you can here the diff. All the best single stomps out there are great due to there wiring, and mechanical whatawhata inside, unless a multi packs all those thousand of parts per pedal it replicates it cant be like alot of them in one box.

I have an analogy:
Imagine you need to print, scan and fax. In the first scenario you only need to do these tasks for your personal needs and you do these tasks from home. So you get yourself a nice all-in-one printer, scanner and fax machine. It works nicely for what you need, but it is a little slow and the quality is not great, but at least it doesn't take up too much room.
Now, for the other scenario, you need to perform these tasks for business purposes. In this case it is better to get an individual printer and scanner and fax for the simple reason that now you can use and upgrade each as necessary. Also, should one fail you wont have to send all of them for repair and they may be used simultaneously. Yes it might be more expensive but after one day you will see the benefits of such a setup in an office environment.
So: the first scenario is a multi-effects unit, the second is a pedal board. You decide what you need based on the required usage.
BTW: anyone thinking about getting a multifunction printer for an office? Don't.

I dunno, for me I think better bang for buck is having one great tone rather than lots of sucky ones. But I get what you are saying...
guitarboy2828
Just go out, buy a rackmount, full it with all sorts of fun rack mounted effects, buy a nice floorboard, get a degree on how to use it.. AND YOU'RE SORTED! ?

I agree with Mika, Danny & Andrew.... but I can't fault a multi-effects pedal either
I have seen Larry Amos' rig... for a once off example... He uses a Multi-Effects pedal...
Can I challenge someone to fault his tone?
Everyone should use want works for them...
I think the tone still comes from your hands and heart... not your gear... ?
edit// John Mayer uses an Adrenalinn multi effects pedal on quite a few tracks too...
Can I challenge another to fault the tone on "I Don't trust myself (With Loving you)"?
