Wailin' on the Wailers

Caught the Wailers last night and two things kept coming to mind:
1. The reggae guitar solos on display could have been edited into virtually any generic rock song and not stood out a bit.
2. There's very few bands that can withstand replacement of a key band member, never mind lead singer... AC/DC borderline successful with the capped chap that replaced Bon Scott, the new Alice In Chains album (featuring Elton John) is actually quite good so I hold out hope with them but hmmm....
(BTW why does Darryl Jones not rank as an official Stone, is he too black?!? WTF.)

Yep. Was it Junior Marvin playing guitar? Reggae is a rhythmic thing, I don't think there's a particular reggae style for lead guitar.

He's a hired hand. If they make him an official Stone then all kinds of legal and financial issues come in to play.

Darryl Jones. Ho ho. Just the latest in a long line of business decisions by the stones. Was stuart whatsit, the stones's keyboard player, to white to be included as an original member? Nope, he was sidelined for business and image reasons, even though he continued to play in the band.

What's pretty egregious in my book, as a huge Mick Taylor fan, is that Sway and Bitch, on Sticky Fingers, are credited as Jagger/Richards, while he wrote the songs and, certainly on Sway, the only think Keith had to do with them was providing backup vocals. A big part of why he left that band, realising he'd never be a "full" member. The Stones got Ron Wood and so gained a really good buddy and all round nice guy, but lost a mind-blowing guitar player (even if he was a rather strange little man).

The Stones aren't racist. But they are very hardcore businessmen.

That was Ian Stewart. Removed from the band by then manager Andrew Oldham because he didn't look the part. That was before Jagger and Richards gained control of the band. It was really Brian Jones's band then.

The Rolling Stones is also a business partnership in addition to being a band. As such, I agree with Bob, a host of other issues come into play. Ron Wood was on a salary from 1975 until 1993. In fact, during the auditions for Wyman's replacement Charlie and Keef are reported to have issued an ultimatum of sorts to Mick regarding Woody's status as hired help. Mick is reported to have reluctantly agreed to admitting Woody into the legal partnership (and thus a share in profits), but it was a compromise thing at a sensitive stage of the Stones' history.

So its a business and a company too. They can make their own rules. After only 16 years Jones is, based on Woody's apprenticeship, still paying his dues ... ?

well, maybe nothing at all, Brian had already left the Stones three weeks earlier, still......???

There was in fact some stirring recently into reopening the inquest...

I think it unlikely. The Stones had wanted him out of the band because they couldn't work with him as a member. Most of the time he was too out of it to play, and his drug convictions meant he had trouble getting visa. So once he was paid off they had their way forward.

Some say that he was murdered by dealers that he owed lots of money, but I think the most likely explanation is that he was intoxicated when he got into that pool and thus drowned.

I tend to agree, but stranger things have happened and made to look like an accident......especially to Rock stars and legends (more recently MJ).......the article below makes for some interesting reading as well....., seems like any of the supposed witnesses are either dead or dying. Meanwhile, the Stones just keep Rolling........ ?

It's cause they went down to the crossroads when the 3 for 1 special was on. Die at 81 instead of 27.

It's a well known industry secret that Keith has been stone dead since 1971. They don't even do much to hide it.

Not so. He had his blood changed in 1973. So he must have been alive at the start of that process ?

What they don't tell you is that his blood wasn't changed for more blood. It was changed for embalming fluid.
