MXR BLUE BOX what else?

Got an amazing mxr blue box but I am trying to find a similar sounding effect, as the blue box with its huge volume drop is not helping. so i am looking for a kind of buzz saw octave thingy, moog like? Any suggestions

I believe the volume drop can be easily fixed by a very simple (1 capacitor) mod. If you just want to increase the volume you just snip the capacitor out. It's a bit more work if you want to make it switch-able.

Haven't done it myself but it's worth googling.

I belive my Blue Box has this "mod", as i hear zero folume drop on any setting.
I got mine used ($40.00 shipped) like that. The previous owner also said he did some low end mod, that makes for a more dinamic and less farty bass response. I have never AB'ed mine w a stock one, but i have to say, i like mine.
It might be a one trick pony, but it does the trick very well.

Boss OC-3
Unlike the Blue Box, this unit can give you one or two octave below.
The MXR is stuck on 2-blow.
Connect your fav fuzz box to an OC-3 and you have a great "octave down" unit.

I sometimes connect one of my fuzzes to my Whammy4, so i can controll the amount of Octaves i go down with my fuzz tone.
Works for Jack White of the White Strripes, so it will deff work for me !

I used to have the oc3, it was very nice, but not grindy enough, the ehx multiplexer might work idno

What about cascading a Fuzz with an OC-3 ???

tried a rat with it back in the day, sounded cool, i do enjoy the glitchy nature of the mxr blue box. Maybe a muff would have worked better with the oc3

the mxr sound, really thas the coolest to me so far, its just a bit akward working with that volume drop, but i have thrown my overdrive before it and it seems to have cleaned up the problem a bit. SO basically with distortions i run OD, BLue Box, Rat. Seems to be nice now. I always found running two or more boss pedals my sound got very muddy on cleans, it seems to lose all the highs. Thats why I tried to keep as much true bypass on the board, with the exception of my TU2.

To overcome that nasty ishooo, you can try either :

MXR Micro Amp --->Blue Box --->Rat

. . . or . . . .

a *good TREB Booster --->Blue Box --->Rat

* Jacques Katapult (my fav), Roger Mayer Concord+ (rather expensive at $250.00, but the best i know of)

Needless to say, a Treb Booster is a vol booster & it boost your high mids (treble to our ears)

I would have thought that it would have driven those pre-amp valves of the twin to over-drive at least a bit.

You might want to try what i do then w my BD-2 & Bassman !

Bassman vol is on 6.5, and the Boss BD-2 is on vol; max / tone; 10:30 / gain; 8 o'clock.
The BD-2 has a massive volume boost, that actually drive my Bassman's 12AX7's to distort quite a bit.

Man, why do you sell all your gear ?
I sold 2 pieces of gear since 1988.
...and gave one stomp box away, as it was that bad !

Never tried a Keely modded BD-2 myself, but i am not overy fond of any modded BD-2 clips i heard thus far !
