Steve Lukather and Arjun Menon are guitarists that must've come along when I took a break from music - I will look out for them.
Lukather you should know - guitarist for Toto (
Hold the Line, Africa, Rosanna, etc.). Arjun is one of our members (one of the posters in this thread actually!) and a
very impressive player - unfortunately I only have a few tracks he's played on, but it's good rock instrumental stuff with excellent composition, arrangement and production. I can hear him blush from here, even under that tan of his ? - he's nothing if not modest. He and Andrew Bryson are the two to watch out for around these parts.
Yeah I know the Rabin solo is slicko and all the rest - but for its time it was original and kicked butt. Perhaps it was over designed and because Rabin now writes movie scores - he possibly more wrote a 'theme' that said it all for the market he was targetting in the genre of his preference at the time.
Context once again - Rabin was charged with reinventing Yes for the MTV generation, but still keeping enough of the original Yes sound and style to keep many of the older "Prog Rock" fans listening. He also had some big shoes to fill (Steve Howe's). I think he did a good job. While
Owner is a bit sonically dated now, it was the single that made 90125 a hit, introduced them to a whole new, larger US audience and rekindled interest in their classic albums.
Owner served it's purpose to pull newer, younger listeners to the album, while the rest of the tracks provided enough depth to hook them for more.
