Can someone please help me find out where i can get my hands on a white epiphone les paul studio custom or the normal les paul custom?...thanx!!

I can understand it though - the white customs are uber sexy (at least until all the gold wears off ?). The Studio version is nowhere near as good looking, IMO.

I would also go for the LP Custom. Buying it new is way to expensive and over prices.

Keep an eye on Gumtree, there is a few going around every now and then!

It's the same issue we've discussed before - the problem with buying blind over the net is that there's no guarantee that you're getting a good or indifferent example of the breed: any breed. It's always better to play one first.

If you're really after a Custom but don't have Gibson Custom money, you could always try to find an unsold or clean used Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom. Less money than the full-blown Custom shop deal but the same basic appearance (apart from aged binding). It'll cost a bit more than a new Epi Custom, but you're getting the real deal (with the '57 Classic 'buckers) rather than an Epiphone that you'd then want to upgrade. It's an option anyway.

But you're still faced with the problem of buy, no try.

Yes, I think purely cosmetic....such as multiple binding, inlay on the neck, higher grade tuners, as in the Gibson LP Custom. (not to be confused with a customshop instrument)

Generally it's cosmetic, although the Epi Signature Customs have better pickups in them like proper Burstbuckers in the Joe Perry Boneyard etc. Whether that extends to the pots, caps, switches etc. is another matter. They're definitely better than the standard Epis (the LP Standard Plus is the same guitar as the bog-stock Standard but charges you more for the veneer). The Ultra II received good reviews, but then it's a bit more pricy than the Custom too.

Truth be told, you'd probably want to upgrade them anyway as you become more proficient / professional (which we also do to Ibanez, Fenders and every other guitar in these price ranges too), and the best Epiphones are the Elitists - which virtually take you into Gibson pricing territory unless you're after an Elitist 335. Once you've got better than 15 grand to spend you could afford a 2nd hand Gibson - as well as any of a number of very good guitars like Tokai, ESP, Fender, Duesenberg, Fret King, Gretsch (the Jet models) and so on.

There are so many good options out there if you're willing to look outside the box. Right now I see someone's trying to sell a Gibson Firebird Studio in v. good condition (Gumtree) for R11500.00. That's not a bad deal at all, when you consider that tonally it'll be between a Les and an SG, and price-wise it's only about 2 grand more than an Epi Custom. For a "proper" Gibson. There's also a MiM Tele Deluxe (twin 'bucker) up for grabs for around R8000.
