Song of Ice and Fire - ditto on the love/hate as Wirt said.
Not so much because he kills characters (or at least maims them a little) - that's at least interesting.
But because WE WAITED 6 YEARS for book 5 and HE DIDN'T DO THAT MUCH WITH IT. The dragon princess is still where she was, not where she's supposed to be going, etc etc... when are things going to HAPPEN?!
And then he ends it on a shameless cliffhanger "to be continued in 2017" (or something). Damn you GRRM.
But they're still the best things since LOTR.
I'm more worried about all the characters he keeps introducing. It's taken 5 damned books for one character to kinda get developing fast, and then in book 5 he introduces several more, some of which can be really influential to the plot so far. I don't know how he's going to tie all of this together, man... I have confidence in the man, but I really, really don't hope it's going to end up like X-Files when the combined weight of all the unresolved plot lines crushed the writers' spirit and the series ended sucking something awful.
Also I really hope he doesn't die, the old fella doesn't look like he ever heard of this new-fangled "balanced, healthy eating plan" idea. *touch wood*
