Well, if not raped, then lets just say that in S.A. the cost of having consentual intercourse with a partner of your choice is a lot higher than in the States... According to Wiki the average Joe in the U.S earns 32 thou a year. In rand terms that would earn you a little under 300 a year locally - placing you way above the average and snuggly in the upper middleclass. So if we forget about how the costs are calculated and only focus on the shelf prices, it would mean that an average american will have to spend less than half his monthly income to own that amp, while a way above average earner in S.A. will have to part with his whole paycheck for the same amp. So Billy Bob with no formal education can buy his amp and still have enough left over to pay the bills, but I cant. We all agree that profits must be made and I dont think anybody seriously thinks we get screwed by the dealers and agents. Everwhere in the world imports cost more. Basic economic rule, so live with it. But it still makes us green with envy when we see what our brethren overseas have to fork out for the gear we mostly only dream of...
100%
I understand it's a necessary evil, but what I can't understand is why RETAILERS have to BUY gear at RETAIL prices?! ???
That makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.
They aren't retail stores then. They are importers, or just shipping companies.
In other words, if the retail price in the States is $800, then the general street price would be closer to $600.
They are still making a profit at $600. Which means that, at MOST, they are probably buying it for $500 (and that's with a pretty shocking mark-up). Many of these stores offer free shipping to the continental US. Factor this into the cost (because, even if they've got a deal with Fedex or UPS, they are still gonna have to pay something for it and factor it into their profit margins), and you're looking at them buying the item for about $460.
Look, I know it works out in the end, and I'm definitely not suggesting that guys shouldn't be making a living. I'm just agreeing with Chris77, it just bums me out that something that should cost R6000 but it's actually closer to R11 500.
Importing sucks! :'(
