Boss DD3 mods and fixes

I'm looking for some advice on my DD3. A friend borrowed the pedal and when I got it back it was not working anymore. >☹
I took it to my local shop and they sent it of for repairs. The tech told them that it was broken because someone probably used a 12v power supply and wrong polarity instead of the 9v adaptor.

So my questions are:
1) Is it worth getting it repaired (Already had to send it back after having repairs done of R280 as it is not working 100%)
2) Get some mods of the net and try to upgrade while fixing. (Keeley mods and Analogman's mods look interesting)
3) Forget about it and buy a new one. (The guy at the store will sell me a brand new DD7 for R1400, but I am gassing for a Nova delay or Vox Time Machine or.... ?)

What say you?

Looking for some support for your GAS?

I'd say as long as it costs less to fix than you can sell it for, it's worth fixing - even just to sell it straight of and buy whatever it is you're GASsing for.

The DD3 was wonderful in it's day, but doesn't compare to more modern units like the DD20, the Nova Delay or the Eventide TimeFactor (in ascending order of GASsiness ?) ...even modded.

Yes, yes I do... I actually use the delay alot. I use it in most songs we play, so I'm sorta stuck without it.

I'd probably get R500-R600 bucks for it. I'm already at R280 down. The tech said, that with the version of the pedal that I have, the main IC is very expensive, almost the price of the pedal. So if the main IC is stuffed I'd end up on -R280 for this exercise.

I love the DD3 it's a great pedal, but like you said, the Nova and DD20 and Eventide stuff are looking much better.

Sadly it isn't worth it. If it was indeed the wrong power and polarity you most likely have not only damaged the IC's but also all polarized parts (Transistors/Caps etc). Also the DD3 has many revisions, the last 2 use double sided PCB's and SMD components, difficult to work without the right tools... So not only are you looking labour, but expensive parts.

My suggestion is to start over, use the case to build a custom pedal of your choice, or see if MD can just order a complete PCB with parts from Boss for you.

yeah, get something new and modern, maby the boss DD-20 (think its around R1500 - R2000, cant remember the exact price), the price you got on the DD-7 is also good.

i see you mention that you use delay alot, so you might as well get something with a bit more flexibility.
And if you get it, dont borrow it to someone(only if you really trust someone)

Friend or not, if I'm nice enough to borrow you something expensive that I really love and you return it broken because of a- YOUR stupidity or b- YOUR negligence, I will be on your ass like a rabid wolverine until you either fix or repair it. Its just k@k style to return borrowed goods broken and not be prepared to compensate for it.

@ Matta - That was what I was affraid of. But like you said now I have a case for a custom pedal. BTW, you don't have any delays in your custom repertoire yet?

@ Manny - Yip, I'm tinking about getting the Nova Delay. Looks very nice.

The Nova Delay looks like a fantastic pedal.
Out of interest though, where would you get it and for how much?

Because, at my last check (thanks to Matta), I discovered that it would cost about the same amount as the Eventide Timefactor... which might just be the be all and end all of delay pedals.
You're looking at close to R5000 though.

I know it's weird because it's $100 cheaper in the states but here they're about the same price.

Prosound are the local distributors for the T.C. Electronic effects. The Nova series pedals (aside from the Nova System) are all R4,020.51 each.

Well I ordered the Nova through www.guitareffectspedals.com.
Their service is excellent so far and the pedal cost me $249, shipping cost $29 (UPS Priority mail 1-2 weeks) and I also got a Electro harmonix NANO Switchbalde for $37. Everything together cost $315 (R2422 on my Paypal invoice). I also got a 10% discount on my next purchase from them. I'll be getting the package in about a week's time. I can't wait! ?

R1400 for a DD7 sounds like a good price. I inquired about it yesterday and it seems they go for around R2500 retail. I bought the DD3 instead. pretty pedal

It is a good price. They recently had a sales push from their supplier for all the Boss pedals and our local store bought a bunch of these on special, so they passed the savings on to us. I got my TU2 for R750 brand new.

Yippeee! I got my pedals today. Can't wait to try them out!
