Most Romantic song ever.

Thought it might be interesting. What song is your favourite Romance/not sexy like Barry White, that gets your heart skipping? Mine will always be Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2 in Cmin (All 3 movements) Especially as the 1st movement gives the feel of drama and passion and the 2nd movement goes to caring and gentle love.

It was doing OK for a while, but the last line I've left quoted.... that's a very wierd line for a love song. Unless it's all about .... you know... THAT. In which case he deserves a kick in the ... you know... THERE.

Sorry, only remember the Mariah version, and then badly as well. Mind you I kinda recall hearing a guy that sounded a bit like Chris de Burgh sing it as well. Would that have been Harry Nilson? What about Unchained Melody - Everley Brothers was it? Would that be an acceptable choice? ?

Actually one of the most spine-tingling love songs I can think of is John Hiatt's "Have A Little Faith In Me". The original version, on his Bring The Family album really brings out the goose bumps.

The Better 5/8 insists it's a Barry White song. I tell her no, John Hiatt was just influenced by Barry White when he wrote that song.

(I nearly typed "I tell her no, John Hiatt was just thinking about Barry White when he wrote that song" but there's more than one way a reader could take that sentence.)

It's another love song that sounds real. Hoo boy! From saying I'm allergic to the damn things I am now drawing up a list of them. That'll teach me.

The same Hiatt album had "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Bonnie Raitt's cover is more famous by far, but trust me, you DO want to hear the original with Ry Cooder rocking out. In fact get that album for Cooder's playing. I swear it's the best work he ever did.

Chris Isaak - Wicked Game

+1 on that one.

Also, though the original as intended by Shakespeare may not be so romantic, is David Gilmour's version of Sonnet 14 (or 18, I'm no longer sure which one it is.) Beautiful and simple tune with great vocals. It's as an added extra on one of his DVD's.

I also agree with Something, it's a beautiful romantic song. I really liked a version done by Celine Dion where Joe Walsh played guitar - a Fender Deluxe Strat with a really nice tone.

@Riaan C: I agree with you on the Roger Waters one, it doesn't get more vulnerable and honest than that! First time I've seen the video, strange isn't it?

The famous version is by the Righteous Brothers. Don and Phil may have done it as well. George Benson had a stab at it. There must be other versions.

I'm tempted to say that if you think it's a love song then it IS a love song. But then I do know people who regard 10 CCs "I'm Not In Love" as a love song.

I'm also having trouble with the idea of "Wicked Game" as a love song. Not that I dislike it or Issak's performance, but is it only me that considers the lyrics and wonders what's REALLY going on in this song.

Apart from the fact that chorus goes "No I don't want to fall in love with you."

The second verse....
"What a wicked game you play
To make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do
To let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say
You never felt this way...."

Sounds like obsession or lust or drug addiction....

Point taken about the thread, but I don't see "I'm Not In Love" as romantic either.

The irony is delicious though, because the tune and the arrangement almost make it a perfect love song, but the lyrics take it some place else.

If we're going to be acurate in our reply to Speedstar than maybe we should be looking in other directions. He makes reference to a classical piece, so I've taken the liberty of posting a clip about romantic music as it appears in wiki.

Romantic music is a musicological term referring to a particular period, theory, compositional practice, and canon in European music history, from about 1800 to 1900.

Sting is reported as being somewhat amused that Police's Every breath you take is such a 'romantic' hit, it being a paean to obsession and a theme song for stalkers! Similarly misunderstood love songs are REM's The One I Love, Lou Reed's Perfect Day, etc etc. Could be an interesting different thread.

I've never thought about "Perfect Day". I've heard it played at company motivational sessions - sort of to get one all mellow and relaxed so as to derive the maximum benefit from the proceedings.

Now I'm guessing it's about some drug or other.

There's quite a bit of writing that this is the dark meaning of the song - spending the day with his habit. The lines about 'you keep me hanging ...' and 'reap what you've sown' makes it likely that what he was taking to the zoo, the movies and all the idyllic places was the little bag containing the only thing he couldn't be without during that time.

Jeez, just realised I'm sounding like those guys who used to come to our school in Std 6 and tell us how to spot the communism, sex, drugs and satanism references in the lyrics, song titles and album covers of all my favourite singers and bands ... :-[
