Koos kombuis - Elke boemelaar se droom!! He-he, good times, good times.., The problem with a lot of S.A bands, and this is purely my opinion so feel free to lynch me, is that they make great songs but not great albums. Often theres 2 or 3 great tracks and 6 or more average ones. That said though, I dont own a lot of s.a music (some fokofpolisiekar, koos kombuis, valiant swart, the nudies, parlotones, jimmy dludlu, and just jinjer. Really mainstream stuff), so maybe the good stuff is out there and I just dont know them. Any suggestions?
The late James Phillips - one of the best songwriters to come out of SA. A lot of his work is released under the names of his band, eithe The Cherry Faced Lurchers or just The Lurchers.
Roger Lucey - another strong songwriter and a compelling performer. He was laying quite low for a while in the 80s and early 90s, so you'd have to look out for "Tighthead Fourie" instead.
Bright Blue - I wish they'd had a live album out, they were such a good live band.
Tananas
Several acts on the old Shifty Records label, but a lot of that stuff is hard to find now. In particular I remember The Genuines. They were around in the mid 80s. I bought their album (which I really should get converted to CD) and saw them live many times.
Brian Finch and Kenny Henson
More recently Justin Taylor, Cabins In The Forest and Guy Buttery
Nibs van der Spuy is pretty interesting
