acoustic day /social in jhb countdown...

hello all right so 1st lets just confirm this coming sat 10th october will be the acoustic day /social at keira's place right we need to know who alls coming ....... rather if you in doubt reply that you will be here. if less people come it will be easier to deal with than if we prepare for 20 and 60 arrive...........so can we start a list please...... right I (keira) will co ordinate this .... but just ask that we get the main organisation done by thursday as i have a fri night show and so won't be online ........ ok so 1. lets get a list of people coming , maybe just mention say keira +2 ect to how many are in your family group.... remember family kids ect are welcome...... so are any acoustic music related friends...... as for what to bring we will settle that in the week but i guess it's simple....... own meat own drink and one salad per family group to be shared by all... music wise ...bring your guitars .......... if anyone has acoustic amps feel free to bring em...... as for rules for the day .......... 1. as we said the no overdive/distortion rule applies to everyone.... no exceptions....... 2. if anyone is rude or abusive , racist they will be asked to leave...... 3. a pool is available.. BUT WARNING ...ALL SWIMMING IS AT YOUR OWN RISK... the pool is fenced but please be wary of young kids wandering in unattended if gate is open ..... 4. music levels will be amplified but soft..... as for times ............well people are welcome to arrive from 12 midday ......... i'm hoping to make it more an afternoon event that might go into the night... no problem if it does...... than have people arrive only at 5pm and the more people that are coming we should start early enough so everyone who wants to can get a chance to perform......... as for performance. i was thinking of running it like i did the open mic sessions at jonathan's with everyone signing up then each getting say 3 to 5 songs depending on the amount of people performing ..... this will make it fair that everyone gets a chance to perform then hopefully after that we can open it to another round or performances. so maybe each performer might get to perform a few times.... and maybe with different combinations.... but i want to not get the situation of a few musicians staying on the stage all afternoon and others feeling left out ... so we'll adopt the open mic system......it's tried and proven.... sound........... i have a small sound system ....which i can set up,,, but if someone who is a PA fundi wants to run the sound and even supply it .... that would be cool.... just as i said levels need to be soft ..... so think PA as acoustic restaurant setting ... so if anyones keen to do sound. just pm me and we can discuss it and setting it up...... any questions?????????? just shout but as i said lets start by seeing approximate numbers....and go from there.... oh and i will pm my address and directions to all those coming ....(the genereal location is ...glen austin, midrand thats olifantsfontein offramp ......from N1) great i'm looking forward to an awesome day ........ peace and light keira

I WAS OUTSIDE AT 9-30 THIS MORNING THINKING WHERE TO SET UP STAGE AND IT WAS ALREADY HOT ............. there is some cover but still not clear on absolute numbers so if everyone turns up we might need some extra shade............ especially if the day is like yesterday or how today seems to be shaping .............

For me it is now just me, not me + 2.

The Better 5/8 may be coming out of hospital today. It's likely that her son will collect her, but the duty may fall upon me. Hope to see y'all there. Probably I will grab a cold beer and then collapse. No fighting over my guitars whilst I'm unconscious please - it would be very unseemly. Flip coins or arm wrestle.

hello all, yes Riaan and everyone else......... those there had a great time........... but from the forum it was not that well supported......... tailon ( who due to a family emergency unfortunately did not perform) /Tomcat( who was sorting out sound ) /Bob ( who performed ) and myself ( who performed) were the only 4 members there .............

however quite a lot more non forum people arrived Tomcat brought along his brother in law Andre and his guitar duo partner ( tomcat please post his name...afraid i have forgotten) .... who performed and were excellent , Tomcats son paul... played percussion ... Glenne my percussionist arrived mid afternoon but played...... and bassist Duri played..... also we were treated to the original alternative folk duo Karryn Austen(guitar/vocalist /composer) and Tash (bassist) .......

and there for support were richard ,Tomcat's wife , Tailon brought his wife and his 3 kids, and my housemate Jen , and my partner Carol , also jazz pianist carlos hartwell and his partner andre arrived late but did not perform.........

so yeah as you could see about 17 people of which about 9 performed.....

thankfully the weather played along and it was great ..and we did it semi outdoors... just under a awning .... .... will post some pics when i get em uploaded....... weekends been too hectic.......

i think we will do this again ..... and hopefully more forum members will pitch .......

Thanks for arranging this, Keira. It was a lot of fun in all ways - playing, listening to the other players, hanging with the various peoples.

I was asked if I could play anything by Nick Drake - which I thought was flattering. The answer is "no" by the way - well I can sort of get half way through "Time Has Told Me."

As usual with Keira the event was well organised.

heheh yeah Bob , re that Nick drake request from Carol who is my new love interest ..... her knowledge and taste of more non commercial music has been amazing to discover.....she's definitely a keeper .......... but yes even I can hear you playing that style too......

and once more thanks Bob for starting your set by playing my request ....the "coconut song " for me..... and yeah everyone loved it.

will be posting pics of you with the smoothtalker and many other shots when i get em in next few days , karryn has them.

as for the camera needing to be adjusted i think so too definitely gonna send it in for a service......... it makes me look like i'm in my 40's .....

She was asking me about Loudon Wainwright.

So it's L O U D O N Wainwright. In fact Loudon Wainwright III. He's one of those artists who has been around for years and years and so his catalog is extensive and it's hard to know where to start. I don't know his history very well, but I'd recommend the live album from the mid-90s Career Moves or the more recent Last Man On Earth as good starting points. He can be very funny, and he can be heart-breaking - sometimes both in the same song. He has a very funny song entitled "TSMNWA" - an acronym for "They spelled my name wrong again". So he's fussy about the spelling ?

Drake is not that simple. I think his playing and his music generally is very deceptive. It takes a bit of listening (and trying) to realise how much is actually going on. His extensive use of unusual tunings (none of which he wrote down) is another potential impediment. The song that I can half play is one of the few he recorded in standard tuning. There's a web site somewhere where somebody has worked out Drake's tunings, or at least tunings that can be made to work.

Hey! I'm over 50 so I don't have to worry about being cool or any of that stuff. Leave it there. It allows people to let off steam in a harmless way by ranting about crocs.

Hey all...We really had a fantastic time on Saturday.

Andre's playing partner is Rudo (i think that is how you spell it)...pronounced Roodo....fantastic classical player and supports Andre well.

We definitely have to do this again...it was great fun.

Paul's hands were rather sore on Sunday after playing that Djembe for nearly an hour.... ? ?....but he really enjoyed himself.

OK those of you who were there... this is the first time I had used the Line 6 pedal other than through the soundcard on my PC. I'm not sure that testing on such meagre equipment gives an idea of how things sound in the real world, and I certainly can't test without having some of the guitar's unplugged sound "bleeding" into my ears over the FXed sound.

So I don't know... it may be that I had too much effect going there. I only used it a lot on one song, the 2nd one - "Spencer The Rover". I was using a tremolo effect. I think that song calls for an effect - even with acoustic guitar, so I don't think that effects per se are inappropriate for such a song,but perhaps I had TOO much effect there. Perhaps I should have backed off the depth a bit.

What do y'all think?

hey Bob.... i giggled when i read what you said on testing through meagre equipment, if it is representative of of how things sound in real world....... truthfully Bob most acoustic gigs even pro ones are played softly ,,,yes the loud festivals are there but as an acoustic musician how we played on sunday is mostly par for the course ... i seen tony cox and steve newman even playing at low levels..... so yeah actually sunday is prob more representative to how the gigs you as an acoustic musician would play than you think heheheheh

but yeah as for the amount of effects.... it was fine...and suited the song in my humble opinion .......... and yes you hearing this from someone as you know that won't even put reverb on an acoustic........ unless it's a recording

on sunday we all played dry (as not even reverb on the desk ) except for you bob who used the modulation .......... and karryn's loop station and it never sounded odd did it ....... just natural... thats why you need a good sounding guitar ,,cos theres nothing to hide behind... and Bob you have one in that Morgan..it sounded beautiful

Hey Bob....I think it sounded great.

Only thing for me maybe is to reduce the depth if the tremolo a bit so it not as radical. Otherwise suits the song well.
