My new acoustic guitar

Bought an acoustic with some of the money i got for my MIA strat. I got it at less 30% discount. Its a crafter but it sounds great for a good price. I paid R3000 brand new.

I played a Crafter many years ago but that model had one of those ovation rounded backs, looks a lot better being all wood.

I'm interested in your verdict on the cedar top. How do you think it compares to spruce?

It's also my understanding that cedar tops do not require the playing in period that spruce tops do. Anybody care to comment on that?

yeah Bob you 100% correct... you buy a cedar top guitar and basically what you buy is what you have ........ where spruce is known to mellow as it matures. which is a good and a bad thing all in one... for if you truly love the original sound it will mature in time and years later might have a darker tone... where as cedar according to what i have read in regards to classicals/nylons gives immeadiate tone ..... but both woods have different sounds too...... so depends what you seeking.. although if i had to buy a spruce top guitar and it was a really expensive one i would as do many other classical players seek out the played in ones who's sound has matured.... i read this a lot on the classical guitar forum........ since at my age i have no time to wait 10/15 years for a guitar to mature i would rather buy a 10 yr old one in mint condition... damn like that ramirez at hugh's fine guitars it's prob reached it's maturity levels now....

and yet strangely i used to be a spruce fan. but i recently been playing on some of the spanish built nylons with cedar tops and i find i prefer the sound........... but i think the sound/tone we seek does also mature with us......... what i woulda wanted outa a guitar when i was 20 is totally different to now....

also i guess the tinitus and hearing loss which almost every pro musician has as they get older also changes how we hear the guitars.... interesting thought that ...... so maybe an older person might prefer a brighter guitar due to upper range hearing loss to compensate........ and vice versa for the younger players.......

Cedar is becoming more common for steel string guitars as well - though I note that Martin, Collings... the "bluegrass" brands are eschewing it. It is becoming quite a big deal on the high-end guitars aimed at the sort of Celtic/DADGAD market. Fylde and Lowden both offer lots of cedar top models these days. The current Lowden range has 4 wood combinations, and only one of them has spruce for the topwood.

Even our homeboy Mervyn Davis offers cedar tops as an option on a Smoothtalker.

But it's coming in further down the price ladder too - Seagull have a lot of cedar topped guitars.

Cedar isn't as strong as spruce, so the tops are usually thicker on steel string guitars to compensate. Some makers are now using redwood (sequoia) which, experts say, sounds very similar to cedar but is stronger. Also, experts say (again), a heavy attack with a pick can overload a cedar topped guitar - but this doesn't happen with redwood.

I like the LOOK of well mellowed spruce. But looks ain't everything.

That brazilian rosewood certainly does look good! Have you seen the Juan Alverez just above it on the list though? Heard a rumour that she's a real beauty! ?
