There was an interesting program on Discovery (I think) recently, where a neurophysiologist did all sorts of scans and tests on Sting while he listened to or imagined music (including his own). There were, amongst other things, significant differences shown between how the brains of professional musicians funtion compared to amateur muso's - much faster communication between left and right brain, for instance in the case of the pro's. Also some explanations why music makes some of us feel good, etc. Really fascinating.
