I've taught beginner guitar from time to time, and this is little boy's favourite riff. This and 'Ironman' One of them also wanted to learn 'Locomotive Breat...

Maybe they watched School of Rock... If I was a 10y old starting out, a movie about 10y olds who learn Smoke on the Water and then kicks some serious rock ass would have been part of my inspiration for sure!

I wouldn't be surprised if they'd been brainwashed from an early age by Daddy. "Son, now listen up. This is heavy rock, not that other junk that gets played on VH-1.

A second approach would be "when you can play Smoke On The Water then I'll buy you that Ibanez with the hot pickups and the whammy bar."

Guitar teachers could write books!

They should! I'm sure it will be an entertaining read. A friend of mine is a classical guitar teacher, and quite a classical purist. She often tells me how eager schoolkids show up for their first lesson, steelstring acoustic and pick included. She then has to explain to them what classical guitar is all about and get them to throw the plectrums away. After about two lessons, one guy said to her: "I think there's been some misunderstanding...I actually only wanted to play campfire guitar!" ? Once, over a bottle of wine when we all discussed how everyone else's day job seemed to be better than our own, she said "I teach gorilla's to play guitar..." ?

When I taught guitar, many moons ago, the biggest problem I had with my kid pupils was their parents! The parents had great expectations for their kids and projected the image and style they wanted for their kids. So what I did was to interview the parents and kids separately to understand their motivation behind wanting to learn the guitar and recommended a course of action.

Some parents visualised their kids as virtuoso classical or flamenco guitarists, whilst all that most of the kids wanted to do was play the latest pop song they had heard.

My task was to find a balance between the two parties.

I believe that music is about expression and that the kids should be allowed an outlet of expression pretty soon in the learning phase. Some kids started off playing the pop stuff and after I had exposed them to a number of different styles, some of them took to the classical genre others stayed with pop, some even took to jazz. Could I teach all the styles? No way – but I could give them the correct basics and when they were beyond my capablilities, I would pass them on to other teachers who were more proficient than me in styles that I was not too good at.

Many 14 year olds, for example, could not relate to the Matteo Carcassi arpeggios, whereas some, who were more folk oriented, loved them. Others were content to learn chords and sing along with their favourite pop songs.

I believe there is nothing more destroying to a music pupil than to force them into a style that they can’t relate to at their particular level of development and influences.

For example, a member of our group back then learned classical piano from one of those teachers who zapped him with a ruler on his knuckles when he got things wrong. He was a fantastic pianist but refused to play the instrument for many years after that and stuck with guitar and bass.

So, could I write a book? Yea. But it would be a guide to parents rather than anecdotes of kids who refuse to practice because they couldn’t relate to the piece/exercise I gave them!

Ha-ha, lol! Grown men with long hair, make-up and jewelry wearing tight leather pants and animal print jumpsuits were the Real Men back then! Ive never seen a video of John Denver in all his macho lumberjack outfits bite the head of a bat before or heard of Wham screwing a couple of dozen band-aids under the stage in the intervals during a show... Wonder what our kids will oneday think of todays heroes? Once read an article in Total Guitar with Brad Delkin from Linkin Park, where he didnt want to smash a LP copy for a photo opp. Not because of any moral objection, but because he didnt want to hurt himself! The photographer did the smashing and mr delkin just posed with the broken guit. Man, what a rockin roll model...

At first I think he's not sure if it's really Ozzy, then he seems to realize it's really him and he says, "Ozzy" and shakes his hand, twice. ?

Amazing kid, and so gifted.

You're correct, sounds good either way.
I just pointed it out because I was watching the "California Jam" DVD and coincidently you posted your tab...out of respect to DP & Blackmore I had to point it out. ?

The "California Jam" version of 'Mistreated' is incredible, also a great riff to learn.

I don't know - the little prodigy and another I came upon Sungha somebody - they're really good but there's something bizarre about turning rock and metal into a kind of packaged act ... I(like tightrope walking, or yodelling at a variety concert). You see a lot of this type of thing on American TV shows. This music was meant for somethng entirely different! But I would have loved this guy as a pupil!
Next we're going to have 4 years olds doing death growls ... ?

My boy will be 5 next month, but is a bit of a Playstation prodigy. I noticed that he was always returning to the first level of the Iron Man PS2 game, despite having progressed to the higher levels. Yesterday I figured out why - he was banging his head to the Black Sabbath tune that is the soundtrack for this level! Four years old, and Ozzy & Iommi speak directly to his sense of whatever innate musical appreciation four-year olds have!

I found that partly cool and partly disturbing! ???
