Review as requested:
Opening act was my mate Wayne Pauli from "The Stremes" played a beautiful 45 minute set of his older acoustic folk songs - the man is a legend, he never disappoints.
Tom and Chris form Magna were in good spirits right from the start. Chris started the show on his own and was joined by Tom after 2 songs or so. Chris played a very sweet sounding and fast looking Gibson and Tom on an equally awesome Martin Dreadnaught. The music was great - highlights (excuse if I get the song titles wrong): Green fields of Eden, Blood on the tracks (Dylan cover), Two old friends (always been a favourite of mine), Lord of the ages (although unfortunately done with recorded backing track), Pictures in my pillow. They did quite a few songs with an alesis drum machine, which wasn't great, but I think justified under the circumstances. Chris is clearly the superior guitar player of the two (not that Tom's bad) and can really let rip with the leads.
Music aside, these guys are consumate performers who are completely at ease with the audience and each other. They were full of chirps and one-liners throughout the show and their long-standing working relationship was very evident. Chris is a Yorkshireman and Tom a Scot and the performance was interspersed with tales of country life in Britain.
All in all, a fantastic evening - the best Barleycorn in ages (and I should know as I used to be a committee member) - hope we see that many faces in the future...
