  • wowowo Magna Carta will be touring SA ......for acoustic fans

This amazing acoustic group of the 70's will be performing at Fogeys on 24th September.
Magna Carta is one of the longest running acoustic acts in the world, founded by North Yorkshireman Chris Simpson in 1969. Tom Hoy joined the group in the mid-70’s. They have toured 64 countries, recorded 30 albums and sold 8,000,000 albums world-wide. It was the albums Seasons’ and the magnificent classic ‘Lord of the Ages’, (regarded by many in South Africa as up there with ‘Dark side of the Moon’ and ‘Sergeant Pepper’) and the evergreen single ‘Airport Song’ that put them on the world map.
On this South African tour Chris Simpson and Tom Hoy will take the audience on a musical journey beyond compare. To see them live is never to forget them as they, seemingly effortlessly, play across a whole range of emotions. You will hear influences that may well have you thinking ‘oh, they sound like…’ But you would be wrong.

Nobody in the world sounds like Magna Carta. Don’t miss these two legendary acoustic stars!

this gig is from an ad i got from a Cape town venue.... who has me on their mailing list ..it's Fogey's in muizenberg (just above the station) great venue with a great inhouse sound system and an owner who is also a musician .......... and he supports lots of SA music.....so support his reataurant

i hope the band plays in jhb too ... i have no dates on that but post a reply if anybody knows......... i loved their stuff when i was at school... almost medieval /celtic sounding music ..... be fabulous to see em........

although i see they only performing as a duo...............
I had a couple of albums

Lord of the Ages and Seasons. Good acoustic english folky stuff. If my Memory serves me well, Davey Johnstone played guitar on some of the earlier albums, he later went on to play with Elton John.

I remember one song in particular ' The Boatman'

    thanks for the info ?

Don't smoke enough dope, don't wax enough boards, and spend too much time huddling behind security fences.

Indeed. So take note - the current lineup is not the same bunch that played on the best known albums. Not saying they're not good (I'm sure they're very good) but just that they will not sound like they did back then.

I don't mean to sound a little bit woooor, a little bit weeeer, a little bit waaaaaar, but I know a guy who knows them, and I'll see what I can do... Watch this space.

Hahaha - he only got confirmation yesterday that they want to include Joburg, so... I'm seeing him again tonight and I'll ask. Sharp.

                          Review as requested:

Opening act was my mate Wayne Pauli from "The Stremes" played a beautiful 45 minute set of his older acoustic folk songs - the man is a legend, he never disappoints.

Tom and Chris form Magna were in good spirits right from the start. Chris started the show on his own and was joined by Tom after 2 songs or so. Chris played a very sweet sounding and fast looking Gibson and Tom on an equally awesome Martin Dreadnaught. The music was great - highlights (excuse if I get the song titles wrong): Green fields of Eden, Blood on the tracks (Dylan cover), Two old friends (always been a favourite of mine), Lord of the ages (although unfortunately done with recorded backing track), Pictures in my pillow. They did quite a few songs with an alesis drum machine, which wasn't great, but I think justified under the circumstances. Chris is clearly the superior guitar player of the two (not that Tom's bad) and can really let rip with the leads.

Music aside, these guys are consumate performers who are completely at ease with the audience and each other. They were full of chirps and one-liners throughout the show and their long-standing working relationship was very evident. Chris is a Yorkshireman and Tom a Scot and the performance was interspersed with tales of country life in Britain.

All in all, a fantastic evening - the best Barleycorn in ages (and I should know as I used to be a committee member) - hope we see that many faces in the future...

OK, guys, sorry for the delay delay delay delay...

Magna Carta will be playing at Tanz Cafe (Joburg) on Friday the 9th of October.
                              a year later
I just booked three tickets for a show in...BATHURST. Seriously, it isn't listed on their site, but I've been hearing rumors for a while and now it seems confirmed. I can't wait. First international band I'll ever be seeing, and one with good childhood memories at that ?

EDIT: Didn't realize the age of this thread, didn't know they toured last year, but they're back ? http://www.magnac.com/calendar.shtml
I cant believe that there aren't any concerts planned for Gauteng!
For goodness sakes they are even in Bloemfontein ?

Let me know Jethro if they have anything planned up here near Johannesburg

Squonk, the guy booking for them says Tuesday October 12 at Tanz. Be aware that Tanz has moved from Bryanston to that new Fourways centre where Hooters is. That's right. Hooters.
