I purchased a beefy Marshall poweramp recently for a good price, but is having a rough time deciding what preamp to get. I know there's some Marshall JMP-1's available on Gumtree, but they don't really produce to tone I want and at the moment I don't even have the money for one ? I really want to get one at the end of the year, but it looks like here in South Africa they're not that easy to get hold of.
Where can I get a decent preamp like a Engl 530 for example and not have to sell both my kidneys?! Anyone, I need help!!!

You get Boogies and also some Peavey classic series types on the market but are not much cheaper. Why not use a modeler as your front end? I have an older J-station i got for cheap that sounds great and would be even better into a tube power amp.

have you got your mind set on a valve preamp cause they are'nt cheap at all, i got a friend who had his JMP here for a bit and it was a very nice preamp i liked the tones i could get from it he also had a Mesa studio preamp here and the JMP to me sounded better tonaly. i think he sold the marshall for about R7k and the Mesa for about R5K but he currently has a SansAmp Rackmount Preamp running into the powersection of a Fender Showman that was built for him and that preamp actually sounds really good, got some killer presets(some are really wild and need a bit of taming). i don't think that the Sansamp is that expensive and Tech 21 make really good product for their price. i have one and i am realy happy with the tri ac.

well if you looking for a JMP1 ( that is the rack mount marshall preamp in gold yes???) if it is i saw one in a pawn shop i often trawl for classical guitars.......... i'm going there on thurs again...it's been there for ages..... i noticed it months back ..........maybe they'll let you have it at a great price......
but then you said you did'nt really like the tone......... anyway ...... if you interested......and yeah the shops in jhb not sure where you from

yes i will look on thurs (thats tomorro) .......... or you can call them... i don't have their number but they called "Execu pawn " and are situated on beyers naude ......... kinda between cresta and northcliff....
as i said i 'm almost sure it's the JMP1 but could be mistaken it's definitely a gold colour single rack unit marshall unit....
but i'll let you know tomorro .....

The Blackstar Dual pedal is frigging awesome , still something i want to had to my collection , played one at music mate , they really are good pedals and make brilliant All valve preamps

Thanx for all the replies, but I sold the poweramp the other day ☹ , but decided to wait until I have enough cash for a nice high gain head, maybe a Krank, Rivera or something in that line. The JMP-1's are nice but just doesn't fit my style and all the electronic patches stuff puts me off ?
