My strange tastes in music - good or bad?

aja · 2009-09-07T20:25:15+00:00

I like the following type of things (to listen to) >MUSE >The Beatles >Creedence Clearwater Revival >most classic rock from 60's and 70's >Simon + Garfunkel >Moody Blues >A perfect circle >Coheed and Cambria >Marcy Playground >classical music - mostly choral or piano works >Sparklehorse - really weird guy >Cat Stevens >Cold Play >Foo Fighters >Chili Peppers Some cheesy things: >Nirvana >Offspring >Abba >Aha! >Eurithmics >Queen Some pil-kop things: >Faithless >Tiesto >all types of trance/techno/psy-trance Is it bad to listen to styles of music that differ greatly to that which you intend on playing? Sometimes I find myself getting tabs and learning songs I have never heard. Part of the fun I guess... I suppose it increases my diversity, but I wonder if listening to "Muse breaks RMS" by Infected Mushroom can really have a good impact on me as a guitarist who aspires to play classic and hard rock? On the other hand, I can't imagine Keira only listens to traditional Flamenco music.

except... Opera. . . Hip Hop ... and "Angry" Music ~~(heavy metal)~~

Dont confuse angry music with heavy Metal ?

When I mentioned Angry in the earlier post I was referring to music that was basically anti establishment and against the norm.
The Beatles were not angry(at first) , the Stones were a bit angry, listen to 'Mother's little helper' etc.
Music had become a bit stagnant in the 70's so what we needed was some energy which the Sex Pistols, The Clash etc provided which helped usher in the 80's.
The 80's became all big and over produced again and so Nirvana etc got us going back to our roots again.
So my use of the word 'Angry' does not mean a bunch of skinheads that will kick your head in but rather getting your point across by going against the norm.
John Lennon wrote some angry songs "Mother", Bob Dylan did a few,

Sex Pistols "God save the queen, she aint no human being...."

etc etc

My pet hate however is music made exclusively for the sake of the sale.

I'm with you on that one. It seems to me there's a studio somewhere in the RSA, which keeps on churning out the same style of tunes ("Stukkend Gedrink Volume 34", "Stoutgat Treffers No 27" and the likes). The same rythm track is used on all the tunes, and the bass track is just transposed to whatever key is used. Slightly different tune, singers and lyrics, but the base is the same for all. And it sells like hotcakes in this country. ☹ Really a sad reflection on what the average white Afrikaans South African listens to.

Hahahahaha......with you on that Brent......can't even understand why music has to be "Angry".....way over my head.....!!! >☹

Because something made you angry and you wrote a song about it. A lot of protest songs are angry. I might even go so far as to say that Joe Jackson's "A Slow Song" is an angry song, it's certainly a protest song. Billy Bragg has lots of angry songs. Woody Guthrie had lots of angry songs. Dylan has some good angry songs. CSNY's "Ohio" was a very angry song.

Jackson Browne wrote some good angry songs. There's lots of them. The angriest song I can think of off-hand is Bruce Cockburn's "If I Had a Rocket Launcher". That's pretty angry.

What I have less time for is personal anger.
"You're such a bitch
You wouldn't swallow
I hate you right now
I'll hate you more tomorrow"
Or some self-indulgent garbage like that. Grow up! Get a life! Who cares?

Bob, I am talking about those SCREAMING songs that you cannot even hear the lyrics (if there are even lyrics) , the songs where the vocalist seems like someone is strangling his mother!!!!!! I will PM you a site (not to offend anyone here) of a local band, where only the TOTALLY GOOFED can (or pretend) understand what the hell is going on...... ☹
Not the angry political protest stuff where you can hear every word the guy is protesting about.........

LOL...I think you might make a killing off those CD's...and you seem to have the magic recipe for making them.

The list of music that I listen to is realy long and you probably wouldn't read all of it any way. I don't try to understand opera or angry music, but everything has a place and maybe one day I'll end up liking it. One thing that disappoints me when I listen to an 'original' band is when they're sterile and only have influences from a small, possibly singular area, ie. they're just mimicking.

I also don't listen to ONLY the guitar in music. In fact I rarely payed much attention to the guitar in music(if there is any) although since joining this forum I've tried to be a little more aware. That being said I find it exciting to try to apply new styles on the guitar with the technical abilities I already have from classical.

Ja Riaan, I agree 100%. I think its a shame that its consumed by us Dutchies with so much gusto. I have a few friends who buy those Sokkie hits and just love theyre Afrikaans music! And I am talking about educated pillars of the community here... I keep telling them theyre a bunch of common tappits for listening to that crap and they keep telling me I am a troublesome weirdo with 'ideas'. Despite it all most of us have been friends since primary school and 20 odd years later, (through marriages, divorces, kids, emigrations and funerals) we still enjoy nothing more than arguing sports, politics, religion and MUSIC everytime we get together. (which is sadly not nearly enough these days) Btw, has anybody ever been to an Afrikaans wedding where they dont do the quack quack song or the macarena?? Eeesh, they're my people and I love em, but sometimes..,

By then I've already tried to skydive off the second floor with a crash helmet and pillow, I've already swam in my clothes in the middle of winter, and "bokkie" have long already confiscated the car keys etc... ?

I have a Buddy that insists on playing his Roy Harper stuff to me (and he has plenty of it)
I can't help felling it's kinda strange, though I must appreciate his guitaring.
spescially the detuned stuff (DADGAD... I think...?) I tried DADGBD and it works better for me but I still can't jam along with the DVD. :-[

Personally I'd rather play hopscotch in a minefield.

My objection is not to the bokkies but to the "treffers". I only find them infectious in as much as I start looking for the penicillin. I'd have to be actually officially dead to not run out of the room screaming "where's that minefield?"

Roy Haper?!?!? There's a name you don't hear that often. I didn't think there were that many albums, but he has been around for a long time now.

(A quick look at Wikipedia suggests that there is actually quite a lot of Roy Harper for those who want it.)

You might find that on some of the albums it's Jimmy Page doing the guitar.
