Which is what happened here. It's a case of high points for technical merit and little more than zero for artistic impression.
I once read an interview with Robert Fripp in which the interviewer was trying to impress upon Fripp that he had far greater technical resources and ability than Hendrix. Fripp's reply was along the lines of "Hendrix had a limited vocabulary but a lot to say, I might know more 'words' than him but I don't think I'm saying as much as he did, or have as much to say."
Music should be about expressing something, not just a demonstration of cleverness and agility.
