Fender Champion 600

Hi Guys I have a Marshall MG50DFX that i know is not liked by most on this site ?

I can get a Fender Champion 600 which is a 5 watt tube amp... How loud will this be? I would need to sell my MG however...

We mainly do small indoor gigs.... Could I mic this amp up and use live or is it really too small?

Using a Champ live is possible, but like playing with a modeller (like a Boss GT-10 or a Vox Tonelab), it means that you always have to be miked up, even for practice and especially if you want cleans.

It also means you are totally reliant on both the PA and the stage monitoring. If either are lacking (in either quality or volume), you are going to struggle to hear yourself or be heard (or both).

Usually you want an amp that's big enough to hang with the band without needing any extra amplification, something that gives you a bit of leeway to turn up if necessary. It also takes a bit of strain off the PA to have a bigger guitar (or bass) amp onstage.

So a Champion would not really be able to replace my MG 50 Watt at this stage? I.e it would not be worth it unless I can replace with a bigger wattage tube amp...?

Heya Matt!

I cannot stress this enough - I would seriously have a look at the Laney VC-15. It is a small compact 15W 1x10" amp that really sounds good, even at low volumes. Yeah I know it is not american like the fender, but I was seriously impressed. I really think it would make an ideal compact gig amp and it is loud enough to practice un-mic'd with drums, whereas the little champ is not nearly enough...

I don't know your PA or monitor system, so can't really say for sure, but that's usually the case with smaller band setups.

+1 AJA...I second the VC-15......Awesome amp for the price and plenty loud enough. Also has a great distortion channel that is foot switchable.

Make that a trio, I own a VC-15 for travel up and down and take it wherever the road leads me this week. And I am fussy as hell...

I hear a rumor though that Music Connection might get some Dr Z amps... Maz18... OH the GAS is killing me too

You know that is the main negative thing I heard about these amps - their reliability. But apparently that was long ago on some earlier models, so all fixed now. I guess yours doesn't have that issue... How is it doing so far? Can it hold its own with a drummer?
