Danny-B Beautiful guits dude! Love that Ibanez! I'm really partial to their hollowbodys, they're actually very decent for their price, and look very awesome too!

AlanRatcliffe Nice collection! The adjustable bridge was an Epiphone thing at one point (AFAIK, they came up with it), and all the Ibby Concordes have it as standard. Generally looked down on from a tonal perspective, but makes setting the action real easy. They can be fitted with undersaddle pickups (you just have to drill the hole through the metal bit), but it does make the pickup very bright and scratchy. I usually used to try persuade the owners who wanted pickups to let me fill in the saddle slot with rosewood and cut a new slot.

I was thinking that there must be potential for a gap between the saddle and the bridge itself, and that this would compromise both tone and the performance of a pickup.

There is always a gap - the saddle assembly is designed to float above the slot, and the saddle vibration is transferred to the bridge via the two big adjustment screws. It's not ideal, as the saddle and the metal base do colour the tone and lose some vibration (particularly in the low end), but they are still surprisingly decent guitars. At least they have set necks, unlike most of the Epis with similar bridges, which had a bolt-on system.
chris77 Thanx for the comments. I probably love the concorde the most, but cant find any info on the 79 anywhere! Shes got a smaller parlor size body and a nice thin neck, and for a noob to have been able to adjust the action just by turning a few screws was absolute heaven! Suddenly Barre chords on an acoustic, man, who would have thought that was possible... She is not very loud and it makes sense that the screws affect the Tone, but to me she sounds fine. I wouldnt want to fit her with an under saddle pick-up though. Just the thought of drilling into the bridge and cutting her body to fit a pre-amp makes me nervous. I have to much respect for the old gal to pimp her up.
Garth-S Really like your collection man! I've just had my 1979 Suzuki J200 fixed up, and the adjustable bridge was removed and filled in. I can honestly say it sounds more than 100% better without the adjustable bridge. It was really thin and tinny before but now it sings like the angels ? . Also had an new pickup installed, apparently built into the saddle, man it sounds SO sweet.
